As Rooney approaches Bobby Charlton's record of goals scored for England I thought it would be interesting to see how Rooney is going to become England's highest goalscorer.
The following stats are before England's current game against San Marino. I imagine he'll get a few more tonight.
Rooney has 41 goals from 97 games, not sure how many are penalties.
F = Friendly - Total = 12
EQ = Euro Qualifier = 7
ECF = Euro Championship Finals = 5
WCQ = World Cup Qualifier = 16
WCF = World Cup Finals = 1
Now have a look at the quality of opposition. This list below shows his first goal was against Macedonia in a Euro qualifier to his last goal against Norway in a friendly. Hardly top drawer opposition.
When you see Lineker's and Charlton's record you see that they were scoring goals in World cup semi finals against top international teams. Not some Mickey Mouse side from Eastern Europe.
To be fair he's not had much chance to score against quality opposition in a major tournament because we've usually been knocked out by then. He has played against Germany, Italy twice, Portugal twice and France in a tournament game but never scored against any of them.
He may well become England's highest goal scorer but he'll never be England's greatest goal scorer.
