The trouble with improving like we are is that the final improvement is always the hardest. Its like most other things, its quite easy to make big improvements early , but when you get good you can only improve a little at a time.
Our teams pre Jol could have made massive improvements with 1 or 2 good players, but now we are at a level that to make a big improvement we would need to buy a player of Messi/Ribery/Torres/Zlatan quality. We aren't getting anywhere near the current top 10 world best players so we are only going to improve our team a small amount at a time.
Personally i think a strong pre-season with an unchanged/unhindered squad is going to be worth more points next season than any player we have been mentioned with or would probably be able to get.

The only upgraded positions i can see drastically changing us are a centre forward who is as good as berbatov/torres, or a ridiculously good attacking CM.

Dzeko/Janko/Chemakh could be the forward we need, abut i cant really think of any CMs who top notch . Diego maybe?

I don't think we two quality players at LB - in fact we're currently stronger at CB than LB

the minute BAE isn't available we're struggling - see what happened after his last red card and subsequent suspension

the strikers might look good in theory but the lack of a 'good in the air' striker is a worry (it might be we can get around it - but it's likely we won't) - in terms of top 6 and trophy chasing

michael69 - "I can say with a great deal of confidence that I am a better player than Gary Neville"

Did he actually say that????

Thats the funniest thing ever, if he was serious.

Im going to try and put my rational, objective hat on for a minute.

For the last few seasons we have seen threads comparing us man-for-man to Arsenal. The results tend to always be that we aren't far off and only a couple of players will take us beyond them. I think this shows the simplistic nature of merely comparing players in this way. Arsenal have qualified for the Champions League for over ten years in a row. It's bread and butter to them, the minimum expectation. We only managed UEFA through the league two years in a row. Arsenal were actually very close to winning the title last year and had they not mentally capitulated mentally after Eduardos injury they could have another trophy in the cabinet. We finished in our average position of mid-table. There is still a gulf between the clubs and although it may not have been preset in the games we have played against them, it is evident from our respective league position. I'm not saying we can never overtake them but trying to get across how much we need to improve before we can be considered better than them.

Despite their recent misfortunes [sic], you feel than any side Wenger puts out will win most games for them. There is a winning mentality through the whole team (that seems to go missing against United and Chelsea). This winning mentality is what Jol was trying to achieve and seem to be something Redknapp is instilling in the team. To me, this is far more important than the actually 11 players themselves and something than needs to be adressed if we are to achieve bgger things. Getting everyone to play to their potential with a desire to win.

I still think we're a couple of world class players away from Arsenal. If we had Berbatov and Carrick in this team, we would have a great chance of finishing in the top 4. But the chances of us getting 2 players of that quality are very slim. Our best hope is that a few of the younger players come good around the same time. Maybe if Lennon and Modric step up another level together, that could make a difference. By which time the top teams will sniff around them. Its going to be tough, but we're good enough to pick up more points against the teams outside the top 4 than we have this season. And we've shown we can compete with the top 4 now. So it might not necessarily be the best squad on paper that make the top 4.

Lets hope Chelsea capitulate after that great loss, with many players leaving because they dont want to be associated with Drogba's disgusting antics, on and off the pitch.

I think we are a good LB (for cover and competition) and creative CM away from being a really good team and probably a striker on top of that away from being up there with the Scum.

We're basically an Arshavin away from being top class.

Currently out goalkeeper is better than Arsenal's and player for player our defence is better than Arsenal's we justdon't have that certain someone like AA to galvanise, drive forward and create. Modric is our Fabregas of a fashion, always probing, lovely passing etc... Lennon is our Walcott but we lack an AA.

good points Hoowl as usual

as a team/squad/unit we are still a long way off the top 4

it's not just our indiviadual players it's the whole club psyche etc

maybe it will change beginning with next season maybe it won't

one indication will be if we get the the necessary point this season to get 7th - it will require the sorts of results we so often fail to get when visiting the NW

Harry has already proved that he can make so called average players play as a complete unit in previous jobs with portsmouth being the the best example.

He knows how to get the best out of what he has got and with our players aleady being world class in some positions you feel with a only a couple more additions he could make us great again.

It's a long shot i know but i feel harry can do that to us but only time will tell because we have had far too many false dawns.
