Thought I deleted the message.

Just really wound up, was an awful display but this lot can't be blamed for an 8 year wait.

No, you're right. That team we put out tonight could beat the second worst team in Premier League history. Play our strongest team tonight and we could have kept it to 1-0 or 2-1 (especially if the ref knew that a rugby tackle in the penalty area = penalty) and still be in the tie with one of the most exciting matches at WHL in years to come next week.

As it is, barring Dortmund putting out their u18s or getting three players sent off in the first 10 minutes we're all but out of a competition we had a decent chance of getting close to the final, with a near dead rubber to come where the atmosphere will probably be as flat as an early Saturday kick off against West Brom.

On top of which there's now even more pressure to win on Sunday, not just because it's Villa and everyone beats Villa, not just because we've only taken one point from the last six, but because we now have to go out and justify the team selection tonight by smashing Villa to within an inch of their lives.

history says different mate:

1997 Premier League 6th (59 points from 38 games)
1998 Premier League 4th (63 points from 38 games)
1999 Premier League 3rd (75 points from 38 games)

and FA Cup wins in 96/97 & 99/00 if memory serves

it gives me no pleasure to highlight this, but it's not just oil money is it?
Didn't Chelsea have a big influx of cash from the Millionaire Matthew Harding RIP. I believe the were able to buy Zola, Vialli and several other very good players. That might explain those league position.

A cash injection that put their squad on massive wages they didn't have anywhere near the revenue to sustain, and which would've resulted in them doing a Leeds or even going bust and having to restart in the 8th tier had Abramovich not come in and saved their arses.

Far too many Chelsea fans have no idea how dire things were financially the year before the Russian came in.

I blame Hoddle. He brought in Gullit and the rest is history.

Lets not all be debbie downers. Get behind this team and see what happens at the Lane in the 2nd leg. If we go full strength we can get something.

I think they are now underestimating us.

Not just Chelsea fans, people in this thread clearly don't either.
I personally am happy we are chasing the league title and we don't need a miracle to win it.

GREAT OP. This is what I thought after the Dortmund game. If we win the league then great but otherwise I'm pretty upset with the team selections in FA CUP & EUROPA LEAGUE as like OP says who will remember that we've finished 4th etc AND even if we do we will never win the CL as we and many others are just miles away from Barca,Real,Bayern,Athletico,Dortmund etc.

Porch is doing an unbelievable job but we need to bloody start winning things again, the game is about glory not coming 4th.

If we beat villa and b-mouth we may be well in the title race that is imperative we get back on track now. COYS

The OP was from 2014 back when our target was 4th...not the Premier League title.

We have now gone 9 years without a piece of silverware, that's our longest wait since the 1950s, which was ended by the double....

Woolwich just had a 9 year sleep from 2005-2014 and they are so fucking brilliant. The best ever.

They have had plenty of naps like that although one of their best is known as "The Long Sleep" which was 18 years from
1953-1971*

*They did pick up the Inter Cities Fairs Cup in 1970 but that wasn't really a proper cup.

It's a weird position to be in though, the club is in the best position it has been in for decades yet still no silverware for sometime.

Deep down inside I kind of expected us not to win anything, not due to any pessimism but just accepting we have the youngest team in the league and sometimes that lack of experience will show.

I personally think we have the best team in the league but despite that, they still have a long way to go before fulfilling their exceptional potential.

Well, with AVB still in charge I'm sure we would have some silverware by now, but I'm not sure if we would have become the title challengers we've been these past two seasons.

Anyway, let's not complain too much. Let's remember we were missing in Lamela and Rose, for most of the season, two of our most impactful and game-changing players. It is actually quite impressive we were able to get so many points without two of our "essential" players. The future certainly looks very bright for us.

If we want to give ourselves the best opportunity to win a trophy then we need to invest in the squad. The problem with the Champions League is that we're not going to win it but it will suck a lot of life out of us again. It's imperative that we improve the strength in depth so we can maintain a title charge, finish respectably in the CL and take one of the cups.

A good squad when in Europe is crucial though. You get more games and also more injuries. It's always good to have options on the bench to change a game as well.
