14:10 SUBSTITUTION- West Brom 0-0 Tottenham
This does not look great at all from Jermain Defoe. The striker is helped down the tunnel by two of the Tottenham staff. Lewis Holtby is on in his place. At the very least Defoe must be a big doubt for England's match against Brazil on Wednesday.
HALF-TIME - West Brom 0 - 0 Tottenham
14:40 RED CARD - West Brom's Goran Popov
Good call from referee Mark Clattenburg for my money. West Brom defender Goran Popov and Kyle Walker have a tussle on the byeline over a loose ball. It is all much of a muchness, but the pair of them are yabbering away at each other as they trudge upfield for the goal kick and Popov looks like he finishes the argument by launching some phlegm in Walker's direction. Clattenburg is on the scene straight away and it is a straight red for the Macedonian.
14:59 GOAL- West Brom 0-1 Tottenham - Gareth Bale
Gareth Bale has always looked like the man most likely to oblige Tottenham and he duly delivers an absolute rocket off his left past Ben Foster after wriggling past James Morrison on the edge of the box. West Brom are arguing that Lewis Holtby was offside in the build-up. Replays suggest he was level with Jonas Olsson.
15:00 YELLOW CARD
Graham Dorrans has picked up a yellow card for a heavy late tackle. This could get a bit spicy with Albion feeling aggrieved at both the red card and goal.
1SUBSTITUTION Gallas on for Walker
Andre Villas-Boas hooks off Kyle Walker and replaces him with William Gallas. Walker is roundly booed by the home fans.
15:16: SUBSTITUTION - West Brom 0-1 Tottenham
Aaron Lennon is withdrawn and replaced by Gylfi Sigurdsson as Spurs run down the clock a little further. Gareth Bale heads over the top from the Icelandic international's corner kick. Three minutes left to go.

Odemwingie out for Baggies

West Bromwich Albion and Tottenham Hotspur will both be seeking to return to winning ways when they lock horns at The Hawthorns on Sunday.
The Baggies had been this season's surprise package at the turn of the year and they remain well placed in ninth, but they have struggled in recent weeks.

Steve Clarke's men have picked up just one point in five games and were beaten 2-1 by Everton in midweek to slip further behind the other European challengers.
They were then involved in deadline day drama as Peter Odemwingie travelled to Queens Park Rangers to try and push through a transfer despite a deal having not been agreed between the clubs
Tottenham were unusually quiet on Thursday, as a big-money move for Brazil international Leandro Damiao was turned down by Internacional.
Andre Villas-Boas has insisted he is happy with his attacking options, although it required a moment of magic from Gareth Bale to rescue a point against Norwich City on Wednesday.
That result marked a third straight draw for Spurs, who were also knocked out of the FA Cup by Leeds United last weekend, and they are now just one point ahead of Everton in the race for fourth place.

West Brom

Peter Odemwingie will play no part in West Brom's game against Tottenham after being given a few days off following his failed attempt to join QPR on Thursday.
Youssouf Mulumbu could return to the side after DR Congo were eliminated from the Africa Cup of Nations.
George Thorne had to be stretchered off against Everton, while Zoltan Gera will miss the rest of the season with a knee problem and underwent surgery this week.

Tottenham

Lewis Holtby made his Tottenham debut as a substitute in the midweek draw with Norwich and will hope to be promoted to the starting XI.
Emmanuel Adebayor is still away on international duty with Togo, meaning that Jermain Defoe will once again lead the line.
Sandro and Younes Kaboul (both knee) are long-term absentees, while midfielders Andros Townsend and Jermaine Jenas have joined QPR on loan.

Unsettled West Brom striker Peter Odemwingie will not be involved on Sunday, having been told not to return to training until next week.
George Thorne is out with a knee injury but Youssouf Mulumbu could return to the side after DR Congo were eliminated from the Africa Cup of Nations.
Tottenham could hand January signing Lewis Holtby his first start.
Younes Kaboul and Sandro remain out with knee problems, while Tom Huddlestone (leg) will not be risked.

I wonder if Peter Odemwingie will switch on his TV to watch his team-mates sweating on the club's behalf on Sunday afternoon? I wonder what his private thoughts will be if he does?
The whole sorry incident of "the transfer that never was" is a shame because he has been great for West Brom and they have been great for him. Don't forget that he was getting racist abuse from his own fans at Lokomotiv Moscow before he came to the Baggies, so he has much to thank them for.
Having interviewed him on quite a few occasions he also seems to be a genuinely nice bloke, friendly, smiley and eloquent. Maybe I should be charitable and, like Harry Redknapp, put it down to crossed wires? Not sure the Brummie Road End will see it that way though.
The excellent Steve Clarke has resisted the temptation to send his wayward striker in front of the baying crowd by picking him for Sunday, instead Odemwingie has been a given a couple of days off; nice work if you can get it. The bottom line is that he might have to spend the next year and half at Albion, and even if he doesn't, an apology is due.
If Clarke can use the unpleasantness to galvanise his side into ending a run of seven league and cup games without a win, I will have even more respect for the Albion boss.
Tottenham didn't get everything they wanted in the transfer window, but Lewis Holtby is an interesting player and finding a club willing to take Heurelho Gomes, even on loan, was a work of genius.
Spurs have been slightly iffy since New Year but are hanging in there in fourth place for now, under increasing pressure from Everton in particular. Clint Dempsey's recent run of goals has been very welcome because Jermain Defoe has been carrying the burden for too long.
Can the disappointing Emmanuel Adebayor get going when he returns from the Africa Cup of Nations? I'm sure that as Andre Villas-Boas travels south after the game he would be happy to hear about a Burkina Faso win over Togo in Nelspruit to get the big man home.

Head-to-head
  • Tottenham are unbeaten in their last six games against West Brom, but three of the last five meetings have ended in draws.
  • Spurs won 3-1 away to the Baggies last season, but that is their only victory in their last six trips to The Hawthorns in all competitions.
West Bromwich Albion
  • The Baggies are winless in five league games, losing four of those matches.
  • Despite a recent dip in form, they have claimed 23 Premier League points at home. Prior to this weekend, only the two Manchester clubs had a better record.
  • Steve Clarke's side recorded four clean sheets in their opening 10 league games, but have managed only one shut-out in the subsequent 14 matches.
Tottenham Hotspur
  • Spurs are unbeaten in eight league matches, but have drawn four of those games - including the last three.
  • The last time they drew four successive Premier League matches was in April 2008, when Juande Ramos was manager.
  • Gareth Bale has scored 10 goals in a Premier League season for the first time. Eight of those goals have come away from home.
  • Tottenham have committed fewer fouls (240) than any other Premier League side this season.

Got to take the game by the scruff of the neck early on and get 3 points, especially after yesterdays results all good for us.

Agree but sometimes easier said than done. Its amazing there are just no easy games this season. There are normally some whipping boys in the league - QPR just dont concede - OK they dont hardly score, but there are no pushovers.

QPR were whipping boys before Harry got their, love him or hate him he deserves credit for what he brings to a team under their present situation.

Stating the obvious here, but when Chelsea lose it's essential we take advantage of that. I still believe we can(had we better options upfront) over take them and into 3rd, probably wishing thinking more than anything.

West Brom are without a win in January will attempt to kick-start a stalling 2013 against a Tottenham side unbeaten in the league since 9 December.

Victory for Spurs will move us within a point of Chelsea in third and three points clear of Everton in fifth.

No Holtby as expected; hope this doesn't cost us.

Only qualm with AVB is he refuses to make a sub before 60-70th min. Frustrating

It's a funny one. In some ways I want Dempsey to play poorly because I want to get Holtby into the side as quickly as possible, but then I feel bad because I have nothing against him as a player, I just don't think he fits the role we are asking him to play.

subs: Friedel, Gallas, Naughton, Huddlestone, Livermore, Sigurdsson & Holtby.

Massive disappointment not to see Holtby start as Dempsey was particularly poor v Norwich. ManU finished yesterday with 4 strikers on the pitch. We're struggling to start with one.
