What's new

What a squad...surely we'll finish top four?

Who will miss out on a Champions League place?

I won't list the whole squad but with all our new signings, plus Vlad and possibly Eriksen, 4th spot has to be the minimum target for this season. All respect to the coaching staff and players but 5th place or lower has to be seen as failure. So, which of the other teams are likely to miss out on a CL place?

Yep, used to missing out, I'm sure we will be there and abouts come March time though.

we are light years ahead of where we were last August - I'll say that. All we had was Bale, and we didnt know how good he was going to be, and a hope that Ade would sign. Siggy and Dempsey, too.

Bollox to that. I'm becoming more and more convinced that Levy and AVB are going all out for the league, never mind top 4! I genuinely believe that is their intention.

Aim high. Why not? Squad is good enough for a strong challenge.

Top four will still be a difficult achievement - this new squad will have to grow together and there are a lot of teams around us with real quality

To suggest we're sure to make top for is to underestimate the task and hand and would unstate the achievement if we do make it this year

We're probably in a similar position as we have been the last few years - Chelsea and Arsenal underperformed so if they punch their weight they'll be a more difficult team. Liverpool aren't even mentioned here but should not be overlooked and the two Manchester teams are brimming with talent and will be there or there abouts

The plus side is all the teams around us have rather large question marks against them too - all except Arsenal in your list have new managers for a start, Arsenal are yet to invest and this could be the best chance we have to really make a statement in the league if we settle quickly as a squad and take advantage of any slack seasons from the more established clubs during their own periods of transistions

For the record I'm voted for Arsenal to miss out because.....its about effing time

It will be interesting this season, this time around the footballing community will look at us and think exactly what the title of the thread states, 'should really get Top Four'.

Lets see how AVB and the squad handle the pressure and expectation.

With the squad we have built/building I will be disappointed if we don't challenge for the title.

re: Gelling, AvB has a rigid philosophy (Every player has a defined role within the team) coupled with the quality of players we have brought in I don't see it being a massive problem.

There are many variables to consider. Will all the new players gel? We'll have a very strong bench - can AVB keep them all happy?

It's far too early to say, i'd be guessing in the dark. After 10 games we'll get a better idea. I don't think top 4 is a gimme just because we bought a few £20m-£30m players in

We need to show that mentally we can handle the pressure and not rely on other teams to bail us out.
If the mindset is right I think anything could be possible and we'll all be going "Gareth who" come May.
Oh, and i've voted we'll miss out as my wife keeps telling me I never get anything right.....

Let's see how Rose deals with Walcott on Sunday and then see if we have a top 4 left back in the team.

I think it's important not to get ahead of ourselves, while we're making some amazing signings, none of them have played in English football before let alone the premier league. It often can take players from abroad at least a season before they're fully adjusted to the league.

We could potentially field a front 6 who haven't played in the league before let alone with each other, some not even speaking the same language.

While the squad on paper has huge potential it could take a season until we see it, the issue with that is football changes so fast these days, if we don't get instant success then that leads to unrest.

There's going to be huge pressure on avb this season, so let's see how the club cope's with it. Starting on Sunday.

When AVB took over, I thought 5th was realistic/minimum. If Harry had been in charge, then as we'd just finished 4th that was the minimum really. New manager and system meant that it was very possible we'd have a worse year than before.

Now though, 4th is an absolute must. Scary to think we could do better(especially considering who the opposition is) but with the squad and same manager, 4th should just be seen as 'job done'.

What a great time to be a Spurs fan :)

I've got a bet on with two ManUre supporting work colleagues. I called us to finish above Utd this season and they both thought I was insane (this is back in June). Now they're both becoming genuinely worried. I'm loving this.
