ok - it's probably not a good idea to join in - but i've had a few drinks and am going to say the treatment of jj and bent has been poor and at times inexcusable by far too many 'spurs supporters' - also badly treated in recent years were stalteri and lee

also as kendall knows i basically agree with him, the 'tottenham way' and the whole double thing has been a curse as much as a blessing from 61 onwards

partly because it seems from about 63 onwards spurs supporters gradually changed from being known as some as some of the finest loyal supporters in the land ( a reputation that went back to at least the 50s and probably the 19th century from what i know) to being far too fond of moaning and denigrating our own players

yes some games are better than others - for example from the radio it seems the crowd v Everton on tuesday was exceptionally good

the crowd v stoke tho, on the whole, was poor - flat as a pancake - as it so often is against 'unfashionable' sides

The whole Bent debate is quite a simple for me. As somebody else rightly said, there is a feeling that there is a really stylish player inside Pav somewhere just waiting to burst out where as bent is just what he is; a player who scores goals and does little else.

but why?

I'm just not sure that I would have replaced him with Crouch, very unimpressed thus far. He is a good player but he makes us play utter wank football.

Wow. other than defoe, crouch has been our best striker of the season, by a mile. he has great control and footwork and finishing and in no way necessitates wanky play. it's just an easy get-out for players to hoof it to him. he is very capable of playing a part in stylish pass and move attacking play

thanx haxman - and :) Son of

I was really proud of the support on tuesday - to sell out the tie was good in itself - and the support made me as happy as the performance which from the radio seemed good/very good (always hard to judge of course - you have to 'read between the soundbites' as best as possible)

:) GV

thanx

well while i'm here might as well say summat re JJ

AFAIK he was rested by HR for the stoke game because of the 4 yellows situ - according to the OS he didn't start v Everton because of a calf strain, (tho in that case why was he on the bench - don't ask me :)

anyway - it seems he's fit for sat and as one of our best mids (probably our best mid overall since his return from injury) I fully expect him to start v arsenal

however hudd and wp played well against everton - so if JJ didn't start there'd be no quarrel from me-

whoever harry picks - as long as they're in form you won't see me arguing - so far Harry has been an excellent manager for us - some of his decisions baffle me - but he knows a lot more about football than I do - that's for sure :)

sorry spursgirl, i'm not convinced. jenas and bent are good examples. poor bent, our fans would sing "jermain defoe is a yiddo" as a reaction to bent missing a shot. i've also seen bentley jeered this season (doncaster, preston).

Or, indeed, as a reaction to Bent scoring a hat-trick.

yep - i too vividly remember that excruciating night when bent scored three - but apparently defoe was the star of the show for us - even tho he was a portsmouth player at the time -

you couldn't make it up - in fact you didn't need to - it really happened

cheers MP and thanx :)

- I'm not promising I'll still be on these boards by sat - i'll see how it goes

but i promise in the unlikely event of jj scoring the winner I'll only start one thread (at most :)

if we get a draw we'll be doing bloody well - but as usual I'm not predicting till the team sheets are read out

the problem with bent, imo, is that he just wasn't a very good footballer in terms of his creativity and intelligence and link up play and even his passing wasnt great, but he could do a job as a striker because of his pace and finishing, the reason he's in my dream team.

'tottenham way' or not, from the board to the fans, we strive to be great, and those that feel darren bent was good enough for spurs maybe don't quite strive like the rest of us because he clearly was never going to be

however, like the x factor twins and emile heskey, it's not the individuals fault, and darren bent's rough treatment along with bentley and jenas are because we are like all other fans of football clubs, some of us are great and some of us are ****s

I could and can easily understand why some/many fans didn't like/rate Bent

however I think a lot of fans decided he wasn't worth the money and took against him initially for that-

which was ridiculous - IMHO -

Bent didn't decide the fee we paid - Levy & co did

indeed Bent should have come with glowing spurs references because apparently he turned down west ham's offer of higher wages to join a superior club - ie us

the key thing, as ever, is how did it help spurs for lots of people to make Bent 'less than welcome' when he played for us - answer - it didn't (again IMHO)

the crowd will always have their favourites - that's fair enough - but it would be nice if spurs fans could be nicer to those who aren't 'favoured' by the majority

if anything the crowd should be blaming the manager, if the blame game has to be played

after all if a player is picked, he's hardly likely to say 'you know what boss the crowd don't think i'm good enough, and I agree, so please pick someone else'

Personally i think Bent might well of rated the fee based solely on the goals he scored last year - He is a striker, he struck, he got paid, what's the problem?

Bents fee was not actually that crazy, maybe just a little OTT, but at the end of the day, Bent was the wrong player at the worng time. We didn't have a style to suit him, we didn't have a partner for him, and he didn't have a chance in our team.

Watching the way Sunderland playe, it's no coincidence he's thriving.

I disagree. How was Bent given time? He was on the bench when Keane and Berbs were here and when they left, Pav arrived at the same time.

Pav arrived a full year later. Even if he had arrived at the same time it wouldn't have proven anything - Bent should take weeks to settle and get to know his team mates, all foreign players need a full season to get up to speed in the prem and Pav should get more than most what with having a near enough 12 month season.

Every time someone brings up that shit excuse "Pav played twelve months, without a break!!1" I tell them Pires, Vieira and Henry played 4 years continuously.

Pav isn't good enough. The sooner he leaves, the better. Hopefully we can get 8 million for him.
