These posts gave me haemorrhoids:
When the CL draw was made all the other fans laughed when we came out with RM and Dortmund. I distinctly remember reading posts like "Spuds get group of death LOL" "ha ha Spuds", "0 points for Tottenham", "better get ready for Thursday nights", "this could be embarrassing for Spurs", and so on.

Now we top the group and draw against RM we're now reading it doesn't matter, it's only a group game, lets see what they do in the knock out stages!

I'm looking forward to the posts "it's only the semi final, wait till they get to the final then we'll see what they're made of".

Would love someone to track down a record of every Real Madrid home match in the CL group stages...

Well I was about to go do that and thought I would start with that year 2006 when the gunners beat RM 0-1 in the knockout stage, surprisingly though thats not only who beat them that year.

Even if we win the CL, everyone would then question whether we could compete again and it wasn’t a flash in the pan and our players and manager might want to still leave yadayadayada..

Wasn't that in the middle of Real's weird spell where they had five or six years in a row where they were knocked out in the round of 16? They had some years where they were really underwhelming, their current side is miles better.

I cant remember that far back but Olympiakos beat them 2-1 in the group stage. The Gooners can fuck right off with that nonsense we draw away to the current consecutive winners

I checked, Real didn't get past the last 16 between 04/05 and 09/10. The Arse win over them back then can't compare to our result yesterday.

No, it doesn't in the slightest bit, however, it's beginning to dawn on some of them how far they have fallen and they may not still stop spiralling yet.

@Marty

I also checked United fixture history against Real as they were making similar comments, and they have never met them in the group stage but these are there results.

2012/2013 Round of 16 Manchester United - Real Madrid 1:2 (0:0)
2012/2013 Round of 16 Real Madrid - Manchester United 1:1 (1:1)
2002/2003 Quarter-finals Manchester United - Real Madrid 4:3 (1:1)
2002/2003 Quarter-finals Real Madrid - Manchester United 3:1 (2:0)
1999/2000 Quarter-finals Manchester United - Real Madrid 2:3 (0:1)
1999/2000 Quarter-finals Real Madrid - Manchester United 0:0 (0:0)
1967/1968 Semi-finals Real Madrid - Manchester United 3:3 (3:1)
1967/1968 Semi-finals Manchester United - Real Madrid 1:0 (1:0)
1956/1957 Semi-finals Manchester United - Real Madrid 2:2 (0:2)
1956/1957 Semi-finals Real Madrid - Manchester United 3:1 (0:0)

Beat them in 02/03 but lost on aggregate

Anything before 2000 is irrelevant

Yeah that's right. The Galcticos era for them was a very disappointing era as they put image and huge global superstar purchases before the ideas of building a successful team. So I'd say it was a bit easier to figure them out and compete with them. They've been the dominant force in these recent years, which makes our draw even more remarkable.

That's really useful when it comes to contextualising the result for Arsenal fans. I suggest a line of argument that goes something like this...

"So you beat Real in 2006. Real were shit then. For six years running, they couldn't even get past the last 16. Can you imagine?"

A pause to let it sink in, and then

"Still they kicked on after that. Can you imagine if they'd actually got worse."

Anything from Madrid?
“I read that the british press called it a "masterclass". If this (lining up with 5 defenders, having Achraf marked by a CB) is the best Tottenham can do, i'm not worried about the away match.‘

“lol masterclass. I was actually quite disappointed in Spurs. They were just parking the bus the whole game, number 2 of the PL playing like Granada lmao.”

“Yeah they played so well defensively, that Benzema had the opportunity to score 3 sitters. If he makes that goal in the 3rd minute its game over. There isn't anything spectacular about Spurs performance, the Depors and Getafes of this world did exactly the same park the bus, only difference is they didn't splash millions.”

"All those tactics and ultimately we were brought down by the idiocy of an own goal. At its imperious best, Real would wipe floor with every team in the EPL. Just ask Manure about that Supercup game. This team is rampant with injuries and out of form players yet all the British media will be pleasuring themselves for days because of a mediocre result.

You know who else played RM to a draw? Levante. So there, congrats on Tottenham accomplishing the same result as an average La Liga team. Hell, Betis is a better team than Tottenham since they actually BEAT Real Madrid. I have more respect for them."

"If BVB werent stinking it up right now i'd pip them to beat Tottenham."

Some of these are in response to a Brit or two trying to defend spurs and the EPL.

I found these on /r/Gunners:
Spurs are everything that Gazidis and co. promised us we were going to be.

The most beautiful thing is that they are on course to be what we were,,,,

Beware Gooners, you're heading for Dozzell and Nethercott land...

If a Chelsea fan tries to goad you about that kind of performance - remind them that they won the competition in 2012 with performances exactly like that in every round of knockout stages. Performances like that are nothing to be snide about.

I find that shuts them down quite quickly...almost like an on/off button.

Does klopp count as a fan?

“It will be difficult to beat that record. It is quite rare to win 7-0 but it showed we did unbelievably well.

“Maribor were quite confident before the game for different reasons. We could read the papers over here because my assistant speaks the language and he said they were positive because no English team had won in Maribor (in the Champions League).

“The next game is Tottenham so it’s pretty likely it will not be a similar result. We have five days to recover and prepare and we are looking forward to it.”
No English team had won in Maribor in the champions league. He is proper bigging pool up here considering they have only played 1 English team in the champions league (Chelsea in 2014 in a 1-1 draw).

In fact, I think this is only the 3rd or 4th time they've ever managed to get into the group stage despite being regular champions in Slovenia as they keep getting knocked out by part time footballers in the qualifying rounds

Ehmmm, last night wasn't at all like Chelsea's 2012 anti football. We weren't parking the bus either, we played with two forwards FFS, and could have had a lead of 2-0 if it wasn't because Eriksen was playing like last season's Sissoko.

Oh, and BTW, our goal may have been an onside goal mistake, but Madrid's goal was a blatant gift from the referee after a Kroos dive.
