The conversation was about finishing positons, not winning things.

You brought up the winning stuff, even the Villa fans quoted wernt referring to winning things.

In terms of finishing positions, we've been well ahead of them, consistently, for years.

Fucking hell, thats not lambesting them for pointing that out, its a fact.

But the way they talk youd think it was the other way round, off the back of one half decent season.
My bad, I thought the conversation was about whether villa were in the same bracket as us in club size etc

Every time I get a bit optimistic about this game I remind myself we’ve lost the heart of our team with no Romero, VdV, Bissouma or Maddison :wideyed:

We’ve got to hope that Bentancur & Gio can step into those midfield positions and thrive but it’s more hope than expectation.

Wondered what some of the Villa reaction to the game and Cash tackle might be like - given their fans pathetic behaviour on social media. As with most decent football forums, there's a mixed view:

It was a really poor tackle, out of frustration that he had been so poor and couldn't get near them, so with Bentancur skipping away from him he went for it anyway. Nothing to suggest it was pre-meditated or part of a wider Villa game plan, but he fully deserved a yellow. A red would have been a bit harsh but with VAR you never know. The sort of tackle that happens about once or twice a game and usually doesn't result in any serious injury.

It is unfortunate that it has caused an injury. Nobody in their right mind wants to see Bentancur out for another extended period, which sadly it looks like he will be.

The Spurs reaction has been wildly over the top but Villa fans are also stoking the fire. Petty and childish, considering both clubs have a lot more to focus on.

Hopefully we can move on now and none of the Spurs players are looking for a real excuse for retaliation in the return fixture.

I see their frustration as well.

I don't understand them losing their minds saying Cash was trying to injure him.

They've lost it. Maybe three losses in a row under the first attacking manager football has ever seen has really confused them.

Their fans are just upset they've lost three in a row and have loads of injuries, so Matty getting the brunt of it. Some of the comments are over the top, and border line criminal in some cases.

I hope this doesn’t go on to affect Cash, hopefully he’s ignoring all the bile one social media, it’ll blow over quickly enough but he seems a bit of a sensitive sort perhaps. Yes it was a bad tackle, it wasn’t a horror tackle, you see them up and down the country every weekend.

If that foul is made by a different Villa player, on a different Spurs player who is not just back from a long-term injury (and maybe shouldn't have been risked by starting him so soon) then nobody bats an eyelid. It's a late tackle borne out of frustration but no more than that. All of the gnashing of teeth about Cash being a hatchet man who exists purely to destroy the careers of Spurs' players - it's laughable.
Also, I think that a lot of the anger at Cash is misdirected frustration due to the number of injuries they already have and maybe a nagging doubt that 'Ange's style of football' might not be viable over 90 minutes or a full Premier League season (whether they have their first eleven or not). Their gameplan means they need to be 2-3 goals up by 60 minutes cos their entire team is knackered by then.

Romero is the kind of nutter who goes studs up into the leg of his international teammate in the same year they won a world cup together.

They like him, and think Cash is a thug. It's mad.

I have zero sympathy for Spurs. I'll say that outright first of all. And I could give a shit if Bentancur got hurt.

HOWEVER I've said before that scissors tackles should be an instant red, so for consistency I need to hold to that here. It's a disgusting technique and any player doing it, whether they meant to - or realise the damage they can do - should immediately walk for it.

It's way more dangerous in a lot of cases than going in studs-up, which was outlawed years and years ago.

It was a poorly timed tackle and a definite yellow. The tackle of a player not coping with his role or pace of the game. But bringing a player back for his first game that was played at such an intense pace didn't help. Nor, I suspect, did him not finishing getting full treatment and jumping up to walk on it and berating Cash. Surely that added more weight to the area and damage?!

They are a little peeved to put it mildly...forgot he did it to Doherty last season too.

Matty has an opportunity to really lean into his newfound status as the most evil footballer in the world by putting out a tweet that says:

NEXT TIME I'M COMING FOR MADDISON.

What they think of Cash:

A game to forget but a very capable player. Say what you like, but we probably don’t win that game if Bentancur (who we absolutely should have signed) goes off.

I don’t want to be too harsh but he’s absolutely shite

Unai please please never play him rw again. He was bloody awful and lucky not to have been sent off

And the match:

Spurs put too much effort into the first half and faded badly in the second half, we could and probably should have scored more, still not sure how none of their players got booked.

Second half in the battle of the Manager's Emery prevailed - astute analysis, immediate action and transformed the game. Once we got ahead we controlled the game. We actually looked like we might have scored more but Bailey and Watkins both held back when the break was on, in the interest of playing the percentages and keeping possession amongst numbers

Off side is part of our game strategy, its not their bad luck, you only have to look at our stats to see it is defensive excellence where our defence is better drilled than their offence. Its how we play, and frankly if off-side flags went up like they used to, they would even get the shot away, but VAR insists linemen keep their flags down which gives a false impression.

This intends no disrespect to Spur who are clearly well coached and look a very useful unit, they gave us one of our toughest games this season. Its early in their project and they do look very dangerous - good recruitment and further settling in will ensure they are an excellent proposition. However I think they have had easier games to date, timely matches when opposition was off colour and a flukey win against Liverpool which was VAR mistake assisted, so this down turn was always due. Like us they have a tough run to the end of December lets see where we all stand in January.

Their intensity was the only way they could get to us, if they hadn't had that intensity we would have kept the ball and controlled the game from start to finish. The only way they could see to beat us was to throw everything at us to get ahead and then hope to hold on as they tired. No team could keep that intensity up and by 10 mins into the second half you could see their entire team was dead on their feet, allowing us to play our game the way we wanted to. We could and should have been better at the start but I am sure Unai will learn from that.

Funny, they keep saying we didnt create anything second half, I'm not even talking about the offside goals I mean the chances, like porro hitting the post, the huge save from their keeper on johnson who is through one on one,.....

Yup, plus if benta stays on we comfortably win that game. We still created a lot of chances second half, they did too but to say they controlled the second half is rubbish

Sometimes i wonder if fans watch the games or just read match reports.

had a Villa fan say they were "miles better on the day".

by every metric available barring the one that ultimately wins the points we were the better side.

with half the first 11 missing.

Without reading much of the last pages of this thread... opposition fans are probably all really sympathetic about our current predicament, right?

  • Hope we smash the spurs and condem them to their 4th loss in a row. Have never forgot the loss to them in the 1981 FA cup final. Hate them with a passion.
Not forgot that handball they got away with in the Champions league as well.
  • Me too. Hated the media bollox, Osssie's cup final, chas and Dave, year of the cockeral, year ending in 01 and the usual london media bias. Fuck em then and fuck em now
  • Yeah fuck em
  • Spurs in bad form, we've seen this story before. I await them scoring the 1st goal before we start playing.
  • Been dreading this game for weeks.
  • I am looking forward to it. Big game against a hated rival, love it
  • I hope we don't F up
  • Must win game this. Can’t let the likes of these, scousers or arses get any hope of a title challenge. We need to reassert our dominance on this league and destroying one of the media’s favourite teams is a great way to start. Need to be wary of var and shit decisions though as they’ll be under orders to fuck us over at any opportunity.
  • Get midfield right & we will beat spurs. Expect defenders to be midfielders & spurs will fly through our back line. Son will be walking our high line.
  • Defence needs to be on it from the start and watch out for runs from Son. I would give Dias a rest and play Ake at the back.
  • We simply can't afford anything but a win here
  • Great time to play Spurs. They are out of form and are decimated by injuries. Son still worries me on the break so defensively we have to be much better which is whtii think Ake and Walker will definitely play
  • Well I agree with that to a point and I don't think they look half as good without Maddison who was a revelation for them until his injury
but you also have to factor in that teams get fired up for playing against us to try to prove a point, and they do have a manager that they seem to play for and who will get them revved up for this one.
I'm confident of a win but I hope we don't look at their last three games and think it's going to be a walk in the park because it could be a tough game
  • We are likely to score at least 3.
  • Spurs are shite defensively, we will create so many chances against them, even if we concede I see us scoring 3 minimum
  • The weather doesn’t look good for Sunday, forecast sleet and snow
Soft southern ****s won’t like that
  • Question; have you ever seen Tottenham win the league?
    Have you fuck! ;-)
  • Question; have you ever seen Tottenham win the league?
Yes, and what is more I can still recall the team (from memory)....
    Brown
    Baker Henry
    Blanchflower Norman Mackay
    Jones Greaves Smith White Dyson
  • Great team, great style.. especially John 'The Ghost' White, one of my all-time favourite players!
  • fuck levy
    Agreed - Class A ****
  • It will be ball over the top of our high line to son, happens every single fucking time , annoying
  • When does Son not score against us?Sick of it now !!
  • Spurs lost Bentancur against Villa, in a quite nasty challenge by Cash, and thereafter lost any grip on the midfield they had enjoyed. Having watched Dias and Akanji expose our defence by getting too tight to Opanda, I’m not sure I want to see either of them go after Son.

Blue Moon bemused...

When we play against Spurs, we turn into Spurs, why? I have no fucking idea.

And cross

Fuck off, Spurs B Team. Fuck off.

But coming to terms with it

That’s one more point than we usually get against Spuds...

I kid you not, this is genuine.

Blue Moon

When you look at the hugely expensive team Spurs could field today with 8 first teamers out you realize what a huge squad they have. We on the other hand are not blessed with such an abundance of riches.

It's obvious sarcasm.
