It's silly. Doesn't take into account the quality of player. For example, the Maddison goal from outside the box had a xG of .06. He scores from that position greater than 6% of the time.
A much bigger flaw is it doesn’t take into account the positioning of defenders/the keeper. Maddison’s was much higher than 6% because there isn’t a defender near him

"Another trophy less season for them". From Villa Talk? From teams that are used to winning stuff, I get it - it's banter, shit banter, but banter nonetheless. From a Villa fan though? Last major trophy (league cup) in 1996 Villa? Even we've won two of them since 1996.

I'll never understand this modern breed of football fan. The complete lack of self awareness is mind boggling.
Villa fans seem to think they are on track to win the europa conference.

More comments on xg. It's a nonsense. All 3 Son' s goals I would expect him to score more often than not and on another day score a fourth (when he was 1 on 1 with a poor touch) yet he over doubled his xg.

Am I the only one who hears/sees someone refer to "Expected goals" or "xG" and immediately switch off?

How about you start with "Expected Lottery Numbers", we'll see how you do, then maybe I'll listen? Expected goals... the fucks is that all about.

Along with. Low block, between the lines, little pockets of space, playing between the thirds.
I know those are not like XG but if you listen to any commentary you are guaranteed to hear these. Along with XG (rolls eyes)

It's for people with pointy heads so they can feel involved.

xG is such a subjective stat. Son and Kane regularly outperform normal xG to the point where you could argue they need their own stat or at least a weighting factor to ammend the base stat.

Newcastle forum during game on Saturday:

"Son gets his 2nd. Let the media wanking over Spurs commence!"
  • Not really had to face anyone yet, although Brentford away is tough and Bournemouth can be awkward at home too
  • And Man Utd too. Some decent tests in there. Good adjustment to put Son upfront today.
They say we haven't "really had to face anyone yet", then go on to highlight 3 of our 4 opening fixtures as being tough. I'd throw Burnley away in there as well, once they find their feet they'll be tough to outscore at home.

We've also played 3 away games, for some reason. Glad to have gotten Burnley away out of the way in the sun shine though rather than the rain and wind in a winter midweek for once..

Or, we'll get even better with Son up top, the new boys grow with even more confidence and Ange continues to improve us overall.

Teams may work out what we're about but if we're playing well and using our bench options effectively (which Ange has already demonstrated he can do) we're going to take some stopping imo
I agree (optimistically) - you could say the same for Ange's Celtic team. So.. teams may have worked them out.. but it didnt stop them romping to the treble...

I said exactly the same on Saturday. Much better playing them in the sun than a cold, wet Tuesday night in January.

You underestimate the value of XG.

it proves how crap Barcelona used to be when they won everything all the time, because Messi used to score like 60 goals a season that weren’t XG so don’t really count.

I don’t think it’s an issue at all about teams figuring us out. It’s not rocket science. Brighton play a certain style which people know but still struggle against. Just about levels for me, as long as the team maintains the energy and maintain quality or realistically improve it we will give most teams headaches. The style and player additions still have scope for major improvement which should address most teams tactical attempts to ‘work us out’. Ups and downs to come but our potential is high and by January we will know where our limitations are and ‘theoretically’ could raise our ceiling even higher. Just enjoying life right now. Gutted its 2 weeks now till Sheff Utd !!
