The Bournemouth win was also a good result. Southampton had been on a bit of a charge until recently, and I was starting to think that they were going to become the only real threat to the 4th spot.

I know it's increasingly likely that we will be in the CL next season (possibly even as champions), but any result that puts distance between us and the clubs chasing top 4 can only be a good thing.

Oh and Villa losing again is always nice.

Bournemouth ruined my acca

We might need a restraining order soon at this point.

"Against Norwich, Leicester had the majority of the ball for only the third time this season and struggled."

From the BBC write up against WBA. So including Brom they've only had the majority of posession in 4 games? And some of their fans have the cheek to say we park the bus?!

Spurs fans are up their own a**** & deluded, ive got some mates who are Spurs fans Cant talk about football in general only about Spurs or slagging off WH or the Arse.

The holier than thou attitude of Spurs and their media annoys me. They can be just as bad as us, yet it is always spun as West Ham being the bad guys.

Oh, and this "cup final" is likely to mean far more to them than it does to us.

Pochettino's getting in his excuses early:

Conditions will be difficult because the pitch is not so good and that can affect us more than them

18 pages and we've still go a day to go before k.o.

Gotta get a minimum of a draw here.. Tottenham's last appearance at the Boleyn can't be them going top of the league.. can it?

mm, tonights results make tomorrow a bit of a must win for two reasons, stopping spurs going top but more importantly, chelsea are now only 4 points behind. Must get at least a draw. Thanks to bournemouth though

We can't not leave Upton Park tomorrow listening to Tottenham singing we are top of the league.

Absolutely buzzing this morning, loving how much is as stake!

Slaven will definitely have worked hard addressing our "slow starts", so this is ours to be won

Disagree. You think it's quicker for Dembele to dribble his way past their CM's to get the ball forward or for Mason or Bentaleb to pass the ball past their CM's ?

I agree Dembele is very good defensively, very hard to knock of it, but we want to transition quickly, it's a vital part of the philosophy, which is why I've said either him or Dier, not both. Not most weeks anyway. And that article highlights similar flaws.

I think he is more useful higher up because he's tenacious, so can operate the forward press brilliantly, can help hold the ball up unlike the erratic other options like Alli, Son, Lamela and he's more threat dribbling at defenders i the final third than midfielders in the middle third.

It's not as if dembele holds the ball too long every time and bentaleb and Mason get the ball forward at first attempt every time. Not only that, the balls got to be the right ball forward, not into someone isolated or played on someone's wrong side, played at the wrong pace etc which I've seen a bit. I think mason moves the ball quick but it can be erratic. Bentaleb is partial to holding the ball or a sideways pass as much as Dembele imo, but I don't mind that from these two as the both composed and good enough technically to manoeuvre it and get the ball back.

When you take into account what dembele gives us physically in the middle of the park and defensively he has to be in there when fit. He can take the ball in crowded areas in midfield and look after it better than anyone else in our squad(Bentalebs also very good in this regard). Imo we gain better control of games when he's playing, we seem to attack and defend as a unit more. I might be wrong but would guess our possession stats are a lot higher when plays than when he doesn't. Don't get me wrong he does need to mix up the tempo of his passing but all things considered like I say he has to play when fit.

West Ham fan in not understanding article shocker. The only reason he enjoyed the Gerrard goal so much was because they celebrated beating a food poisoned Tottenham so much a few days before. It wouldn't have been any different had it been Portsmouth or Villa in their position

I think this bit resonated with me:

As you’d expect from a team using these principles, they build up from deep with short passes from the centre-backs and pivots. It is the pivot’s job to create triangles and rhombuses, making it easy for Spurs to pass the ball around the opposition’s pressing lines and up the pitch.

A good structure in possession will allow the ball carrier to have immediate open options as soon as he receives the ball, meaning he can move the ball on more quickly, and make for a more effective and entertaining possession game.

And later in the piece:

Dembele and Dier aren’t highly intelligent as to when to get the ball into overloaded areas quickly and at times play the ball too slowly. After a left-back, I would say Pochettino should prioritise adding an elite pivot to his squad should he still be Tottenham manager going into next season.

Just to pick up on this point. It is why I have continually said I would like Bentaleb or Mason in the midfield if we are going to play Dier (or Dembele) rather than Dier and Dembele or Alli at all. I have continually made this similar point. About Dembele moving the ball too slowly and Dier's passing being very risk averse under the tight confines and pressure of Cm sometimes. About Mason and Bentaleb's ability to move the ball quicker and get it to AM's before the opposition are banked into two lines. Alli strengths are in his willingness to bomb forward and get ahead of the fulcrum striker. Not continually moving to make passing options for those at the back and middle of the pitch and continually recycling the ball effectively and efficiently.

He also highlights that despite being when of the possession leaders, with fluid attack, we are only 16th in terms of crossing. This is why I keep advocating Trippier over Walker for home or easier away games. He suggest we should prioritise a left back.

Another thing I'd pick up on is the bit about Dier filling in at RB, it does happen of course, but tactically I think what happens more than Dier filling in at right back is Alderweireld moves out and covers the RB (or the LCB moving to cover LB) and Dier drops back to become an auxiliary CB. IMO.

I quite liked the bit about how having ball playing CB's (especially when Vertonghen is there) creates more options than we would have if just playing double pivoting CM's, this is why I've always liked (decent) ball playing CB's, it's like you effectively have an extra player (or 2) on the pitch to the opposition and as the piece says, makes you less vulnerable to opposition pressing, because they know they have to press 6 players in their forward areas - we used to see the opposition press people other than Dawson, knowing if they can force the ball to him he will just hump it and we will turn over possession. CB's don't have to be Ferdinand, but as long as they are comfortable in possession and can defend as well, it's a vital component.

He also makes a fair point about how our pressing can lose it's structure for phases.

Regarding the crossing he also insinuates that more crosses dont translate into more goals and actually our choice to create more through the center is why we have so many chances and why we have so many goals. This is why he highlighted the 16th in terms of crosses stat.

The choice to play which fullback runs far deeper than "who is the better crosser" i feel.

One thing that many football coaches forget is that the goal is in the centre of the pitch. Therefore the best way to attack is centrally. The reason why many teams leave space on the flanks when defending is that the ball is harmless when it is in that area. Crossing into static players in the penalty area is also likely to prove ineffective as it will be too easy for a competent centre-back pairing to deal with. Spurs try to open up space in the centre of the pitch and attack with a combination of low vertical passes and short combinations to try to penetrate the oppositions defence. Despite having high possession statistics, Tottenham are 16th for crosses per game in the Premier League this season, a stat which shows their central orientation in the final third. Also, they have the highest percentage of shots from outside the penalty area of any team and take the most per game with 7.8. This shows that they are effective at opening up so-called ‘Zone 14’ space and moving the ball into space in this area of the field. The fact they have scored the second most goals from outside the penalty area of any team (9) shows that they are creating good chances in this area, not just taking speculative efforts.

Interesting stuff. I'm not sure we could get better fullbacks than we already have though, realistically anyway. While I'm not saying Rose, Davies, Trippier, and Walker are elite world class players, I'm not sure we could attract anyone better than them that fit so well into our system. Our full backs have been superb this season. Same with the pivot position, I agree with what your saying about Dembele, but it's a similar situation to the full backs. What we have fits so well. I don't feel Bentaleb is the answer either.

Riggi is literally the only one I 'know' who does. But he's an oddball anyway so it's irrelevant :sneaky:

I fucking hate West Ham. You'll find a lot of Spurs fans who grew up in Essex that will hate West Ham, especially those that are about 30. I say that because a load of West Ham supporting mates gave it the biggun' when they finished above us under Redknapp when we were generally shit in the late 90s and any "banter" received as a teenager usually shapes which clubs you dislike the most.

I fucking hate them. This game is SO massive for me tonight. Almost as big as Saturday.
