Yup. Anyone who thinks we have even the remotest chance of winning the league is massively deluded. 3rd place is our ceiling atm.

And that's why Merson is talking bullshit because we were never supposed to be in the title race to begin with - to declare us out of it is him just making stuff up as a stick to beat us with. He might as well declare that we've no chance of winning La Liga now either - "Dey've blaown it int dey Jeff?"

He's a mindless prick and I won't have anyone saying "BuT hE's RiGhT" because that is one thing that is never, ever true.

To be fair - on the basis of last season when you are dealing with Liverpool who only lost 1 game all season and City who had a record points haul - he is 100% correct. However it is a new season and no guarantee either Liverpool or City will be able to replicate what they did last year so there is no reason to panic just yet.

Don’t know what’s so funny he usually talks rubbish but he has hit the nail on the head here ... we have no chance for the title .... top 4 will be a huge struggle playing the way we are ! 16 points in 15 pl games !

The only thing I’d say is that I don’t think we’ve ever really been considered for the title anyway. He’s right, but he’s a prick for making it seem we’ve fucked up our entire season after only 3 games. Top 4 is where we are realistically

Of course we're not - you expect us to make up 25+ points on City and Liverpool after buying a couple of players in the summer?

No serious pundit has ever put us in the title race this season and rightly so. We are nowhere near either of them. Isn't that patently obvious by the performance vs City? Quite apart from how lucky we were to get the result, the most fundamental thing to take away from it was their complete domination of us in every area of the pitch.

What gives you the impression that we should be challenging for the title?

Because we are good enough to do so? We were matching both Liverpool and City for much of last season before we totally fell off a cliff in part because of our European run. We have strengthened more than both teams in the summer - why shouldnt we be up there fighting for the title?

Fortunately for us whether we can win the title against City is not on the basis of one rubbish performance from us vs them.

Your logic is a bit off here. Thinking we are not in the title race is fair enough and likely true.

But Merson saying gaining 5 points on a team over 35 games is a big ask is completely ridiculous.

Well he's not really being unrealistic is he? He's assuming that Liverpool and City maintain their near flawless form from the last 50 odd games, for the next 35 games. It's an assumption, but not an outlandish one. Then you factor in we have 15 points from 15 games, and are the third worst perfoming team in the division over the last 15 games. To think we will challenge for the title is frankly demented. We will need to go from taking 15 points from 15 games, to taking 45 points from the next 15. To have a chance of the title. LOL. It's not happening.

Based on current form, to even challenge top 4 will require a huge turnaround from the direction we are heading. I think people are in for a bit of a wake up call over the next few months. It is quite clear from the posts on here that some of you haven't quite grasped how shite we have been recently.

Merson says reactionary things all the time, but I have to agree with him on this.

We have to play liverpool. 'IF' we beat Liverpool its 2 points.

We took a point from the alleged best team the PL has ever seen on their turf. I didn't hear Merson blabbering last weekend that we were title contenders.

Calm the F**k down its August.

That is not a declaration we are going to win the league bit ffs ITS AUGUST!!!
Always astounded each season that Merson still gets works as a pundit. Nothing to offer in terms of real insight or analysis. Watching Soccer Saturday it feels as if I have turned on the TV and its 1995.

Not if you actually read the second sentence of my first post. Lovely to ignore it and just try to make something out of nothing though.

If that was the point then us beating them over 38 games is unrealistic anyway.

Thinking being 5 points behind with 35 games to go puts us out of the title race is fucking ludicrous however you want to spin it.

It was unrealistic based on our form since the turn of the year yes. The fact is we should be doing better and be much closer to them. Poch has to bare the responsibility for us being so far off the top 2.

On the contrary, with 35 games to go, whilst mathmatically it is possible, based on our performances, it is ludicrous to include us in any title race.

I think our chances are about the same now as they were at the beginning of the season.

We’re 3rd or 4th favourite and rank outsiders.

I don't think "no reason to panic just yet" quite equates to "We bloody well should be challenging for the title"...

And the point remains that no, we shouldn't. We are nowhere near them.

That's because we are not playing well right now, not because we have a worse team - we have the potential to challenge for the title with this squad - we SHOULD be up there. Form is temporary but class is permanent and all that. If we can get back to playing at our best regularly then we will be right up there.

The question that has to be asked is how have we managed to fall so far behind Liverpool in the space of two seasons?!!!

They have spent an absolute fuck tonne of money. City levels.

They got lucky with Salah turning out to be a hell of a buy and they've rolled with it. Other smart acquisitions as well as a couple of good emerging youngsters.

They also have a bigger name to them, and a bigger fanbase. An already established stadium too. Makes it easier for them to buy top quality players.

The manager's style has really helped them. They needed that galvanised approach, it suits their fans too. It's just clicked into place for them, but don't forget that Klopp struggled until he got the players he wanted.

Well, that's cleared it up then.
