Forgot Brad :-( yeah BAE won't be here, Khumalo didn't even know still had him. So 16, allows us one foreign as stands.

Yes, but that does not necessarily mean he wants to register 25. Most clubs don't. 25 plus Bentaleb, Davies and Dier makes for a very unwieldy squad.

just as a side issue people, when does the 25 man squad list have to be in? I thought it was before the first game and then updated the day after the transfer window closed

I must say, now that I realize that Schneiderlin is considered HG, he would be a nice signing. His signing would mean Dembele would go methinks.... Chadli has one foot out the door now, loan or otherwise...
Dier and Davies are a great fit so far and plenty of potential to be great in time - both under 21 and not counting for the 25 is nice

I was having a think about our squad size and homegrown quota after seeing the paper talk about Southampton bidding for Townsend. The official site says we have the following 30 players:
GK: Lloris, Friedel, Vorm
DEF: Walker, Naughton, Davies, Rose, Dawson, Vertonghen, Chiriches, Kaboul, Dier, BAE, Fryers
MID: Sandro, Dembele, Paulinho, Bentaleb, Capoue, Mason, Carroll, Holtby, Lamela, Eriksen, Lennon, Townsend, Chadli
FWD: Adebayor, Soldado, Kane
Homegrown, Club grown, U21
Out of these players 3 can be omitted from squad registration as they are classed as U21. Carroll and Mason, whilst being home/club grown are now too old for this. Fryers, Eriksen and Lamela also need to be registered whereas last season they didn't. Dier is not homegrown but doesn't need to be registered this season so most likely will not be to free up space in the quota.
We need to register 8 homegrown players for the league, and for the Europa we need 8 homegrown and 4 club grown. From this I can only guess that we will likely offload Mason and Carrol (maybe loan) as they're not strong enough for the first team. We have plenty of CB and LB cover so Fryers will probably go on loan too as we will have other, more important HG players to think about. BAE is surely surplus to requirements, as well.
This leaves Dawson, Walker, Naughton, Davies, Rose, Bentaleb, Lennon, Townsend and Kane. 9 HG players, of whom 5 are club grown. We can still afford to let one club grown go to adhere to Europa registration rules, but we can only name a max of 25 players in either competition. With Mason, Carroll, Fryers and BAE out we have a squad of 26. Dier counts as a freebie. One of Davies or Kane can as well, as we'll still have the 8 HG and 4 CG required. However, if a homegrown player is sold we'll have to count Davies, unless we sign another HG player, and if a club grown player is sold then we will have to register Kane.
The major thing I take away from this is that we barely qualify in terms of registration, so the club must definitely be thinking about this quota when buying/selling. Getting rid of the HG/CG players is going to be risky
If we treat Dier and Kane as freebies, and assume that Mason, Carroll, BAE and Fryers will not be in the squad then we have 24 players. Bringing in Schneiderlin and Musacchio raises it to 26 but it means we can have Davies as a freebie as Schneiderlin will take his HG place, dropping it back to 25. The difficulty now is that in order to buy anyone else we have to sell a non-HG player, unless the replacement is HG. We can't sell one of our CG players either otherwise we'd have to register Kane and make the squad too large. This is why shifting Lennon is bloody hard for us. Also, selling Dawson might be problematic. These are things people need to think about first before reeling a list of players who they think we should flog.

Of course they do, but I'm just highlighting the fact that it's not as easy as saying "let's sell XYZ" as you have to take this into consideration. Who we buy will impact on who we sell. I can see why Schneiderlin is an important target, not just because he's Poch's man, but because he'll add to the HG quota. It's why we went for Davies too, a promising player but also someone who will allow us to sign more foreigners whilst letting go of HG players ourselves.

I don't think the PL and Europa league registrations require 8 homegrown players, rather they limit the number of non-homegrown player who can be registered to 17.

Most clubs don't want to end up with a full 25 man squad, of whom 4 or 5 only play less than 10 PL games- better to have say 21/22 players with a few development players playing those < 10 games to get experience.
So we probably don't want to add another overseas registered player, and probably prefer to sell one !

Of the 30, there are four U21 (Bentaleb) so we're already down to 26.
BAE is not going to play and to be honest, Friedel's contract is just so he can learn more and become part of our coaching staff isn't it? So leave him out too. Why waste a place on him? He's 43 and we have Vorm.
I want MM and MD in at the expense of Daws and Lennon.
So to me the squad should be:
Lloris, Vorm, Vertonghen, Musacchio, Chiriches, Kaboul, Sandro, Dembele, Paulinho, Capoue, Holtby, Lamela, Eriksen, Chadli, Depay, Adebayor, Soldado (17)
Walker, Naughton, Rose, Mason, Carroll, Townsend (6) + Davies/Dier/Kane
And that's the 25 man squad.
edit: Forgot about Fryers. Well, he can count as HG, or he can be loaned out.

Although I didn't highlight it I was aware about Bentaleb (edited it). The good thing about Depay is that he won't have to be registered as he's only 20, something we may consider if we go in for him. Also, Schneiderlin is just as much a possibility and one we have to consider. I think Mason and Carroll may be loaned out though considering we've already got a large contingent of centre midfielders. Even in the Europa they may not get game time.
