Can someone remind me HOW and WHY that happened.

I think it was the year we brought in Klinsman wasn't it?

We were deducted points and booted out of the FA Cup for all of the clubs dodgy dealings prior to the takeover. Sugar successfully argued that it was the previous ownership and not the club that should suffer. After that we ended up 7th(?), and got to the semis of the cup.

Yes, that was the season of Ossie and his (in)famous five. Brought in Klinsmann, Dumitrescu and Popescu. Two of which, including Barmby, left after that season.

Think it was due to paying 'bonuses' to our players that weren't declared, or something like that.

The dodgy dealings went back to Irving Schoeler iirc.

Think I cried that day - our name was on the cup and the fairytale from not being in it to lining up Man Utd in the final was on the way. Only to be shot down with a shocking performance.

I used to have a lot of the paper clippings from the case that went on that summer and the dealings. Anyone remember the Today paper?

Our best player that season was off the pitch, Alan Sugar. He played the FA like amateurs. I think they learned a tough lesson that year.

Not to do with the Inter-twobob Cup.

I'm pretty certain it was about financial irregularities which pre-dated Sugar - he was able to get the punishment significantly reduced by arguing that there was no-one left at the club who had been involved. I think he got it from 12 point penalty, FA Cup ban and fine to 6 point penalty and larger fine.

We got banned from entering Europe in 95 that didn't we?

We got battered 8-0 by FC Koln in the Intertoto cup, I remember cause I was watching with my dad who kept laughing at every goal conceded... I remember Ian Walker's twattish face sticking his tounge out like a mug :D

That was the start of it... We started the season on Zero points with the deduction NOT showing on the league table as he argued that it would be detrimental to our performances. He then got the Points and FA Cup ban overturned. I also think the fine DROPPED.

Improper payments as I recall. Backhanders to the players or something like that.

Honestly wish we never got reinstated into the FA cup that year and I never would have had to suffer as a 14 year old kid the trip to Elland road to watch that 4-1 beating which is to date still my worst day in football

Oh I think Spurs have probably disappointed you much more since. Last year when we got mauled by 5 goals by every team in the league be west ham beating us thrice were not fun. Gerry Francis getting is walloped by the barcode was awful too.

Nah, the flip side was that the fine was doubled.

No - that was by far and away my worst day as a Spurs fan, nothing else comes close

I was still a school kid and at an age where Spurs meant everything to me, it times since while obviously there have been multi more such disappointments I've been an adult and while still of course emotionally invested not to the same extent as back then as I have more going on in my life

Plus that year the cup had our name on it, we'd been let back in and had the SAS firing us to success at Anfield to set up a very winnable semi against Everton. On the couch up there we were all discussing how many goals we were gonna win by, who we'd get in the final and how many Jurgen was gonna score (defeat never even entered the conversation as a possibility)

Being beaten by West Ham isn't nice, being smashed by teams by 5 or 6 goals is a disgrace but for the most part these were one off league games or early round cup matches

In the time since the only games I can think of to compare really would be losing to Arsenal in the semi of the FA cup, Losing to Real wasn't great but so expected it didn't hurt, Blackburn cup final, some Europa league penalty losses and the one that really sticks out is the lasagna gate incident (the biggest difference between that and the Everton semi being I wasn't at Upton park that day, but that's the only single day I can compare to the Everton semi in terms of how gutted I felt after the loss)
