Better tonight? He will go back to 4231 against city which I can understand slightly as we have to show them a little respect but wouldn't be good to see Sandro back instead of Carroll who by the way is coming on a treat and see him start with adebayor and jermaine somehow?

I dont think it was far off 4-2-3-1 tonight in all truth. Adebayor was given license to drift around and link up play, and then when we defended Defoe often dropped in as the extra man in midfield.

I agree..... What did you think of Carroll? Apart from the fact he looks like a good meal, he clearly has a very good footballing brain.

That was Carrolls best game for us, he's always been a neat and tidy player and I saw a fair bit of him on loan at Orient, but he was much more forward thinking today. He reminds me of Carrick in the way he always makes himself available for a pass.

Refering to the DoF-question.

I honestly can't see why we would want a setup with a DoF. To my knowledge DoF's are hired because some chairmen want a permanent staff member as their "consiglieri" - a member with an idea, and a strict approach on which players to buy and sell.

In an ideal world this setup would work, but that is only if the setup includes a Manager who only want to focus on tactics and man management. Furthermore the partnership between DoF and Manager will only work if they have the same approach on formation and which player types the squad should hold. The importance of the latter should not be underestimated as some Managers clearly does not want to have primadonna's(Sir Alex) while others tend to go for them(Mancini). In my opinion hiring a DoF is also a bad signal sending to the Manager in charge as 99% of them would probably prefer signing their "own players".

Looking on our own history concerning DoF's it hasn't been very successful either to say the least. Pleat, Arnesen and Comolli all worked in this position and they all failed - ovbiously together with their Manager in charge.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I really can't seem to think of a DoF-setup which has actually been succesfull over time... Arnesen/Hiddink is probably the only one which comes even close, but again their partnership didn't last for long during the 90's.
