It's amazing how a few weeks off makes me ridiculously optimistic again - it happens every season - but I really believe that Modric will have a big impact and our defence will be more settled. If we keep Berba and get (or rediscover) a top goalie I don't see why we can't get 4th.

it would be interesting to see if any of these polls have ever been correct.

I agree about waiting to see what the squad is come August, but our pre-season form usually has nothing to do with what happens as soon as the league starts.

Aren't we unbeaten in a ridiculous number of friendlies??

agreed Alex, hence what I say is wait till the window is closed and you've seen the 'new team' perform once before predicting

I waited a similar time last season, then predicted 7th, and got a lot of criticism for being too negative. A lot of people had of course gone out an optimistic limb a bit earlier and had predicted 3/4/5 etc -

in fact turns out I was way too optimistic myself but my prediction was a lot closer and a lot more realistic than many/most of those who predicted in early august or before

I understand people like to do this before the season begins - but I just think you get a better shout by waiting till early september- of course if you wait till early May you get a better shout still :)- but it's plenty hard enough to predict spurs final position in early september so I think that's a valid time to predict

I definitely agree with you and think we do need to bring in better players, but in terms of how the team performs as a unit, rather than the individuals, I think we are actually pretty good. If we stick the the same deffensive principles as last season, but replace certain individuals, then i think we'll be fine. Not as good as the top 4, but certainly as good or better than the rest. I remember after the first couple of months Ramos was in charge, I went through all the goals we conceded and virtually none of them were to do with how we set up as a team, but because of stupid errors by certain players. Teams like Everton have alot of seasoned pro's in their team and whilst they lack our talent or ability, the likes of Yobo, Jagielka, Lescott, Carsely, Neville and Howard, tend not to make these stupid mistakes and it shows in their goals against tally. If we are able to buy a couple of more reliable players and then apply the same principles and team ethic that saw us concede comparitively so few chances, then we should be pretty good deffensively.

And of course bringing in a couple of seasoned pros (and having King fit for more than half the season, plus a fully-functioning Robinson) meant we had our best defensive record in years in 2005-2006. Stalteri came in for a ludicrous amount of stick on account of a handful of high-profile errors, but by and large he did a very solid job, as did Lee.

Constant chopping and changing of the back line because of injuries has wrought havoc over the past two seasons, too, and been a major contribution to Robinson's decline.

Set pieces have been our downfall, and close-range headers have replaced long shots as our bugbear.

Thank you Oh Saucey Meatballs and Noodles

Couldn't have put it better myself. While Modric and dos Santos are both very encouraging signings, we still haven't addressed any of the weakest areas of our team that were responsible for our poor form last season (i.e. a new goalkeeper and a defensive midfielder, let alone a new centre-back given that we can't just keep our fingers crossed for Ledders to play for the majority of the new season).

At the moment, there are still a fair few clubs with far better balance in their teams than we do (even if we have a few 'gems' that are better than them in certain positions) and if the season began today with no further transfers, I wouldn't expect us to be any higher than 7th at very best.

Top half, at this moment in time.

5th, if we make signings of the Modric/GdS calibre in our weak areas.

The thing is a huge weakness of our team last year was not killing off teams, not keeping posession, not making changes early enough (Jol mainly) and not having a settled back four because of injuries and the King situation.

As for killing off teams, Modric and depending on how much he plays Dos Santos should cure that problem somewhat. Modric also looks very good at keeping and using the ball effectively. Ramos has proved adept and bold at making changes although sometimes too hastily but he has won/drawn more games than lost with them so you have to give him credit. As for having a settled back four, we can only hope but if you actually think about what kept King out intermittently the last half of last season and what injury Bale had, there is no reason not to be optimistic.

There are also other factors the effects of which are hard to quanitfy but need to be taken into account like Ramos having a full pre season. It may be meaningless to predict now, just as it would be to predict the US election result but it is still interesting.

Oh and who voted we would be relegated?

What type of hillbilly bourbon are you sipping on?

and where can I find it?

Well I am just down the road from Bourbon county so plenty on offer here... Woodford Reserve is a rather nice tipple.

However I don't think finishing in the top 4 is that far out of our reach. Last season was a wake up call but the Tottenham of today isn't the same Tottenham as the previous 20 years. Previous to the formation of the premier league it was the big 5 and Tottenham were part of that and can & will be part of the big boys club again.

Next season Man Utd (even without Ronaldo) & Chelsea are pretty much guaranteed top 4 status but can the same be said of Arsenal & Liverpool? The door is slightly ajar, we need to make sure we walk through it and can do so with the set up we have now. Not only do the players need the belief they can do it but so do the fans...

I'll be gutted if with the structure in place now we don't at least put up a good fight.

Well, I think it's too early to quess where we will finish next season. I'll wait to the start of August and see who have left and who have come in. And also to see how the other teams are doing. So I tell you then (in this or in the 10 other threads concerning this issue...) ;-)

But certainly we should always aim for the title!
