Klinsmann & - much further back in time - Martin Peters.

Peters I was only a kid but I remember him coming and the disappointment of Greaves going of having more of an impact

Ardilles and Villa were the most exciting signings for me - foreign players no one had any let alone a World Cup winner it was all over the news and we had a session in the ground when they arrived ticker tape welcomes at Forest and against Chelsea it was really exciting at least until the Livepool game 7-0 and Tommy Smith trying to mame Ardilles for Swansea

Gazza, Lineker and Klinsmann for me. I remember us signing Lineker and being really excited that he'd be linking up with Chris Waddle - and then Waddle moving to Marseille days later.

Klinsmann was the first big transfer I remember and my dad was so excited for it.

Recent years top 3 for me is probably Lloris (as I said in another thread, FM legend for me at the time and knew he would be first choice for many years for us), Edgar Davids (he was just cool and at the time we couldn't really attract those types of players, who had been there and done it) and then VDV, loved watching him play so when we signed him, I was so happy.

Ossie Ardiles and Ricky Villa in 1978

Argentina had just won the world cup, then these two dropped in after we were promoted back to Div 1.

Those two were real statement signings. Ossie, at that time, was probably the highest profile signing Div 1 had seen.

I remember watching Ndomble boss Man City off the pitch with Lyon in the CL and was desperate for us to sign him. I thought he was our Dembele replacement and some more.

I tend to get stupidly excited - even now I feel the same level of excitement I did as a kid.

But in my time supporting Spurs (around the time of the Klinsmann signing), I was particularly - and unreasonably - excited about:
Klinsmann
Iversen
Ginola
Ferdinand
Rebrov
Poyet
Ziege
Keane
Robinson
Defoe
Davids
Bale
Gio Dos Santos
Rafa VDV
Soldado
Lamela
Ndombele

Mixed bag, really
Wasn't bothered at the time about players like Modric, Berbatov, Demebele, Vertonghen, Lloris, Carrick, Toby - all of whom were arguably more successful for us than the majority of my list above

The most exciting signings of my youth were Ardiles and Villa. No question. Given what we'd been through the twelve months prior, and how we'd just squeaked out of Division Two, to have not one, but two World Cup winners arrive at Tottenham was genuinely astounding. I was 10 at the time and gave it large to all my Liverpool-supporting friends that we were going to win the League. Two months later, we got dicked 7-0 at Anfield. A harsh lesson, but a useful one for anyone growing up a Tottenham fan.

That apart, I also remember being inordinately excited about the arrival of Christian Ziege. He was a really decent wing-back but there's often a reason the likes of Liverpool sell their players and, in this instance, it was injuries - and they plagued his time here too. Shame. Still in my all-time Spurs XI at left-back though.

Klinsmann was most exciting for me. Then probably Davids. Then VDV. Ginola, too.

Van der Vaart is the one that stands out the most, to me. 14 year old me going home and signing him to Spurs on PES was a great day :)

I remember also being excited about us signing Giovani dos Santos. What a monumental waste of talent.

Lamela and N'Dombele, neither of which i had seen kick a ball before but listened to all the posters on here waxing lyricals about them and the amount of excitement there was surrounding them when they actually signed. I have therefore made a conscious decision not to allow myself to get caught out like this again and will now just wait until theyve played a fair number of games before i pass judgement and allow myself to get too excited.

Before that the famous sold the Elvis and bought the beatles got me so excited that we would no longer just rely on one player to beat teams but we could instead look to half the team to do so instead. What a disaster bar of course Eriksen.

The return of Bale. Greatest day of my life and I tell the wife and kids that on a regular basis.

Being that much older than most on here if not the oldest my exciting signings go back many years. I remember how excited I was when we signed Dave Mackay I believe from Hearts. He came with this tough but talented reputation and I remember thinking this no nonsense hard man was just what we needed to balance our already smooth slick style and I was right. He was the protector of the skilful John White and the fast attacking Cliff Jones.
Then of course there was the unbelievable Jimmy Greaves. When I heard we had signed him from Italy I was beside myself and I remember calling all my friends for days.
There were others over the years Gilzean, Waddle, Gazza, Ginola and of course Ardiles and Villa, but to me Mackay and Greaves really stirred the blood.

Ah that’s a lovely post. Wish the site had more posters like you who could recollect our best period as a club.

Klinsmann. Not sure i remember anyone signing a player so far above their level as a team, though I’m sure I’ll be corrected. Was an age before the premiership had opened up so much to the rest of Europe and global superstars seemed like deities from some footballing silver screen.

On a personal level, I was in Spain with a friend when I was a 15 or 16 and had just watched the youth World Cup, in which one player was tearing opponents apart, regularly skinning 4-5 players and scoring from 30 yards. Looked like the best player on the planet and I’ve probably never been as excited about a signing as when eating my gazpacho I heard the news we’d signed Jose Dominguez. Couldn’t wait to get home.

Was so excited I let my soup go cold.
