i am lucky enough to have seen most of hoddle's games at home, and fair share away.

he was a genius...probably born in the wrong era...today he would be priceless.

Gazza was immense...but sadly was influenced by the wrong crowd...but was strong, skilfull he had the lot.

Scholes is one of my all time favs....a player engand wasted.

Becks made the most of his talent...but not in the same class as the others.

if i had too choose one......GLENN...maybe i am biased...but he was fucking awsome.

What put me off Scholes a fair bit is some of the horrific tackles he puts in. Some are just "mistimed" but some are malicious with no intent for the ball.

None of the players in question were tacklers, per se, but Scholes is the worst of the lot. It's his temperament I suppose.

I mentioned this about him earlier on today in the thread.

This is why in my opinion he is not the best, he lacks the class of Hoddle because of the naughtiness that he had or stil has

Must have missed your post mate, but needless to say I fully agree with you!

A lack of class is spot on. Hoddle is definitely far superior in that respect, plus for me at least Hoddle was the better player anyway.

The bold statement is what sums this thread up for me perfectly and is exactly why Hoddle edges it. These things happened when I was a kid and are what made my love for Spurs at an early age, All of those things you mention were so effortless, and I still remember a perplexed Steve Sherwood wondering what Hoddle had just done to him, he couldn't quite believe it.

Gazza could have been top of this list, had Alex Ferguson got his way, but, thankfully for us he didn't, and we have the memories and not Man Utd fans.

Beckham as you say, perfected his art by hours of extra training, Scholes is one of the best the PL has ever seen, but for all of his genius football brain, he still has that naughtiness to his game, the late and bad tackles, which for me, shows he lacks something to be the best.

This thread inspired me to YouTube Hoddle just to see if my memory was a bit rosy tinted but it just made me remember all the other stuff he did.
Sidestepping, holding off players, pin point passing, placing the ball in the top corner from 20 yards out, there was nothing he couldn't do.

And the guys balance and poise, a truly elegant footballer.

It's a long time since the hairs have stood up on the back of my neck but watching some of those compilations took me back 30 odd years to being a kid again.
Like George Best it was a pleasure just to watch him play.

I pretty much had to flip a coin between Gazza and Hoddle. They are both streets better than the other two though.

1.0) Gazza
1.1) Hoddle
7.3) Scholes
9.6) Beckham

I am not saying he wouldn't have still buggered himself up SP, I am certainly not advocating that Red nose would have been a better babysitter than El Tel.

All I am saying is that he would have maybe, and only maybe, become an even more higher profile footballer, and maybe a better footballer, if that was atall possible, by joining up with Man Utd, for the start of the premiership, when they began there world domination.

It's possible. But there again, as someone else (mybe even you) said earlier, GHodd was all footballing brain, Gazza was all instinctual. He may have become 'better' before he inevitably buggered himself, but there again, what we saw of him was pretty phenomenal, and he may have already peaked.

But really what I was reacting to, which is not necessarily what you said in your first post, and is certainly something you clarified as being definitely what you weren't saying in the second, was this myth that 'Fergie would have looked after him better', which I have heard Mancs saying and even a few Yids.

I'm guessing the people who voted for Scholes arent old enough to remember Gazza or Hoddle.

I think that's a key point. I think if you look to pure ability then Gazza and Hoddle are a cut above the other two.

If consistency, hard work and achievement are top of your criteria then Beckham and Scholes deserve a mention.

Hoddle was the best by far, in fact, mix together the best of Gazza, Scholes and Beckham and add an extra touch of class and there's Glenn for you.

Feel disloyal for voting for Becks but he is not only a great player and a wonderful ambassador for England (which is fairly irrelevant) but I am a girl - and he's a... bloody good free kick taker.
