Why is no one excited about Townsend?

Imo, we will see Bale playing on the right of either a front 3 or a 3 behind the striker more next season.

That is Townsends best position as well, so I don't know if he will get much game time.

I'd love to see Townsend starting on the left of a forward three in a 4-2-3-1 with Lennon on the right and Bale in the middle (behind a decent striker of course). That pace would rip most teams apart.

Problem with that is it would be exceptionally easy to defend against, Lennon + Townsend on the wings doesn't = a lot of craft to me, would be difficult to break teams down camped on the edge of their own box. Away from home could work though, would certainly make teams think twice about committing too many men forward.

Townsend is mentioned behind Lennon because he's not as good as him. Lennon may only get about 4 or 5 goals a season, but he consistently gets around 8 assists, and his threat on the counter attack is one of the most lethal in the league.

Townsend had a decent impact at QPR last season, and is definitley improving. But he's not there yet.

I'm sure Andre will be keeping a keen eye on the two in training and pre season and will make the right decision.

sorry but what I have seen of him im not excited. if we are to have townsend as an integral part of our team this coming season then we are not qualifying for the champions league. townsend will end up at a lower end premership team or championship side. he is matthew etherington

Well they certainly seem to have one thing in common.....

People really underrate Lennon's contribution to the team. Even if he's not having his best game, defenders are still wary of him because of frightening pace, with or without the ball. This leaves space for others to exploit.

If he just had a bit more quality with his final ball, and a bit more power in his shooting he would be an absolute superstar. His close control and pace are unreal at times.

I really rate Andros but Lennon is better, imo of course.

It's hilarious the virtiol that Lennon gets on thsi forum. Then every single season Lennon gets injured for 2 months, during which time we only win 2 out of 8 games . Those same naysayers will then start threads on here about "how important Lennon is to the team" and "everything will be alright when we have the pace of Lennon back", even though they were saying that he is the weakest part of our team during the summer.

I'm excited about the potential of Townsend no doubt and have repeated my desire for him to succeed on numerous occasions. The main thing for me is that he's spurs through and through and clearly loves the club he plays for. He also fits the 4-3-3 formation very well with his playing style and the way he likes to dribble inside and shoot.

In terms of his ability as a player - He has goals in him, has a sledgehammer of a shot, can use both feet well, rapid pace, and runs at his man all day. Whilst Lennon is currently the better player, Townsend has other qualities and could end up being at least as good. He gave Monreal (Spanish international, cost the gooners over 10m) a torrid time when QPR played Arsenal.

The main advantage Lennon has is that from a standing start there is nobody in the PL quicker to accelerate and he can skin any fullback from there, this leads defenders to stand off him, or double up on him, or he has a free run in to the box. Townsend's acceleration is less good, but he can certainly dribble very well and is still rapid as hell. However If Townsend can improve his decision making, crossing, and make use of space better, then he could have as much, if not more impact later in his career.

Yeah, very excited by Townsend. To the point I really don't want us to sign this Chadil chap. We don't need him! We have a pretty tasty looking winger already. I feel the same about Carroll. Can we please get rid of Hudd (who I do appreciate has qualities) and Parker (who is basically my current favourite player) in order to give Carroll more chances. Like Townsend, Carroll really could make it. We also don't need a centre back or right back for a while as we have Caulker and Smith.

If you're reading Levy, just put ALL our cash into getting us a striker - that's all we need! Every single penny and every single second available should be spent on getting us the best striker we can possibly get. Anything else is unnecessary.

Oh, just an aside about the people talking about Lennon: please, please, please SC can we get off Lennon's back. He's been and continues to be brilliant for us, so just leave the little fella alone!

No-one is excited because he's down Ladbrokes instead of training

I think he's got a big season in front of him, he is what we lacked sometimes last year, a pacey winger. when Lennon or Bale we out injured we seemed to plod along.

Because The Who are sooo last century (y)

Seriously, though, from the first time he got a run-out with the 1st team I have been commenting about how direct, purposeful and intent on making something happen, he is. Not one to be a 1st team automatic, by any means, but certainly one to come on and make an impact and maybe cover for injuries.

Is Townsend really 6'0" tall? I just looked at his Wiki and that's what he's listed as but I always thought he was smaller for some reason.

Another player who should be given a fair run of games. Like Falque and Carroll. Very very difficult for them to get into the team because we have nearly no games to experiment. We need every point.

Pre season will be very important for them.
