Wigan or Madrid

Been having the same argument with a mate of mine for weeks now, my argument has always been whats the point of planning for the future if you ignore the present, yes we might get into CL next year and get knocked out at the first round, who knows when we will be in the quarters again !! we have done what no english club has done at the first attempt and done it with style !!! so we need to make it first priority.

However his counter argument is just as justified, if we dont get CL next season then its very likely that the core of our team will be knicked and we wll have to start all over again, whilst giving teams like man city and liverpool a couple of years head start.

for me it will always be the Real game but not to say teh wigan game is not huge for us

With our squad we should be looking to get a win against Wigan and take a respectable scoreline back to the Lane from Madrid.

If we don't then there should be a huge sense of disappointment from everyone at the club and among us fans. Time to get 'er done. No more fannying around and making excuses.

Whoever plays in either game give 110% effort and dont worry about other games, will do for me.

We cant decide which is more important cause both are but I just want the players to concentrate and play each game as the most important like how the other big clubs do.

Win the CL and finish 5th in the league, with Man City finishing 4th, oh how I would laugh....

Failing that - then 4th is imperative

RM every time.
But this is where having a strong squad comes into play. HR's got to motivate those not playing regularly.
Unfortunately, our injury list is lengthy and loans have depleted an otherwise strong squad.

v Wigan
Gomes
Hutton-Bassong-Dawson-BAE
Pienaar-Modric-JJ-Krancjar
Pav-Defoe

?

v RM
Gomes
Corluka-Gallas-Dawson-BAE
Lennon-Sandro-Modric-Bale
VdV
Crouch/Defoe/Pav

?

Our injury list is very good at the moment. Only Palacios is 100% ruled out for the Wigan game. There are doubts on King, Woodgate, Bale and Huddlestone but they could quite easily all be available

We have two big games coming up for two very different reasons.

In one competiton we are flying in the other we are crawling.

It is a shame we are not flying in both but thats football.

I just wondered what people prioritised as the must win game of the two crucical away games if we are being realsitic.

For me a win at Wigan is more important i would have in fact taken two clean sheets at blackppol and wolves over clean sheets against milan.

for me we have gone further than I ever expected in the CL and if memory is correct even if we win it and come 5th we will not be in it next season as i belive UEFA changed the rules after Liverpool.

so for me qualification for next season is the priority and a 2-0 win at wigan is my priority. we have done well in the Cl this season and we need to make sure we can perform in it next season.

this will also ensure that we mainatain progress in attracting world class players to the club.

dont get me wrong would love to hammer them both and hope we do BUT as mentioned in being realistic and if we had to win one or the other I would like to see us start picking up points in the league

I'd take a 1-0 loss at Madird for a win at wigan

The most important game is the next one, so today, that means beating Wigan. On Sunday that will mean beating Madrid.

Picking up 3 points is more important as i dont see a way past barca if we somehow manage to beat real. either way i would play the fringe players on Saturday as theyll be more up for it.

Defoe and pav, niko, hudd, bassong, jj and peaunut should all start

But if Harry has half an eye on the Madrid game, it could mean we're compromised...and he's only got one and a half eyes at the best of times.

I'm going to Madrid so I'd love us to get a result, and I was in Milan for one of the best away european nights I've had - and I go back a fair way - but I would have swapped that result for a win at Blackpool or Wolves or West Ham and I will take losing in Madrid 0-5 if we start winning in the league again, starting with Wigan.

If you could guarantee that we'd win the CL that would be different - but lets be honest, it's still highly improbable, but we must qualify for the CL again, it is far more important than doing well in the CL - as much as we have all enjoyed it - that is just a huge bonus.

Wigan and the league more than madrid and i'm going. We're not gonna win it so let's concentrate on our only route back into it and sustained success. Just think how flat the Europa will feel next season ....

Even worse would be having to watch yawny Man City playing in the CL against all the big boys

Wigan is a huge game for us and we owe them one for them beating us at the Lane. I fear a little that we will focus too much on the Madrid game and take Wigan a little lightly but we have to turn up as they deservedly beat us last time out.

I think Hudd might get some game time in this one but I don't think we will risk players who might not be fully fit.

For me the Wigan game is more important right now, especially with 3 home games following it. Win at Wigan and we can roll into those 3 home games still in the race. Fail to get a win and we are really going to be outsiders to get the CL spot.

4th is much more important than anything.....but...

How can anyone really not be excited by playing Real Madrid, and beating them!
When you dream of famous nights and victories its in Madrid not Wigan,,,
Romance has gone out the window most fans moan, and then we would rather beat wigan than the most famous club in the world!
I fully understand that 4th is vital etc etc....but just for once i couldn't give a toss about whats right for the club...Beating Real is what i would want....i think most of us deep down would all chose that.I also think if we failed to get CL next season, we could mount a serious title challenge, so its not all doom and gloom.

Deep down, I want to be playing Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Inter and Barcelona with the whole of Europe's TV's tuned in next season and for the next ten seasons. I've seen us win trophies and european trophies. What I haven't seen in my lifetime is us be a consistent challenger in the league for more than one season in thirty.

I'll go ballistic if we get a result in Madrid, but we need to beat Wigan more.

I understand why Managers usually prioritise the League over Cups (except for Houllier they usually have valid reasons).
However, I can't believe anyone would prioritise between the League and CL.
Anyway, every game is to be won, and when we don't win I am disappointed.

Meantime I'm still dreaming of a Wembley final. We have as much chance of winning it as coming fourth really. You can't rule out Shakhtar nor Liverpool in the League as they play both us and City.
