Will the return to Europa League action derail our push for 4th?

The important thing to remember here is that the 2015 winners of the EL qualify for the CL. Being Tottenham and no qualification to the CL up for grabs this year I fully expect us to comfortably win the EL and finish 5th in the league. :ROFLMAO:

And to think if we get through to the next round the EL match is before the NLD.

Scary.

The thing is we've assembled a big squad and yet the rotation between EL and PL is still minimal.

Today only the front 3 and Lloris were changed. I found that astounding. Kaboul injured again despite not playing for a week and a half, but where was Eriksen, Sigurdson? Even Fryers could have had a go at left back.

At what poinr do we need to change the title of this thread to "is the quest for fourth place derailling our chance of winning a european trophey?"
By the end of march it is perfectly feasible maybe even likely that we will be nine or twelve points down on Liiverpool, if so I'd like to still be in the Europa league.

It's cost us 4th before and it looks like it's going to cost 4th this year and no doubt it will cost us top 4 again and all for nothing as we're never going to the win the bloody thing. It's just too fucking hard. I absolutely loathe this competition. It's the single biggest factor holding our club back.

I and others were proved right. Those who thought we should be setting out to win this competition should hold there hands up and admit for once that we shouldn't of been bothering with it. Putting out anything but the kids in this competition this year and last was the wrong thing to do.

Sorry, can't agree with you here. All the turmoil this season, everything considered and thrown into the pot, the EL is what's cost us 4th? No, no and no again. Onions etc

But I do love you.

Yup, too easy to blame the EL.

If nothing else, we absolutely have to ensure we finish ahead of United now and qualify for the EL. Personally, I think it will be easier to qualify for the CL next year by winning the thing, rather than trying to finish 4th.

Seems to me now that our race for 4th is essentially over, so IMO we should throw all at the Europa League and try to win it. Well ... we're not going to win it, but at least try get a semi or a cup final.

Getting even a semi for Tottenham right now is proving a bit hard

Will be just our luck not to qualify for it next year now when winning gets you into the CL lol

It's not the only reason obviously but I'd say it, like last year, is going to be enough of a difference come the end to cost us the spot... We could completely implode now in which case it would never of made enough of a difference. There's obviously been other reasons but this is by far the easiest rectifiable one and would in my opinion make enough of a difference... It's all the more frustrating as it actually involves NOT doing something... Which by definition is fucking easy.

7 defeats this season. 5 in europa weeks

You can't argue with that stat, but the teams in the CL over here seem to cope alright, and really have the scum got a much deeper squad than us for instance ?

Maybe we should be looking into our routines after the Thursday game is played, because whatever the rest/training balance is, it clearly isn't working.

CL clubs play tuesday and wednesday yet are just as likely to play the following Sunday as they are saturday therefore have only a one in four chance of having only two clear days between games the same as they have for a four day break and double the chance for a three day break.
With europa its a two clear day break every time, small margins but it all adds up so CL teams have the advantage, lets be honest if it was the other way round UEFA would have changed it by now.

The fact remains that the only 2 occasions we finished in the top four was in 09/10 when we weren't in europe and 11/12 when we went out of europe at the group stage after playing the kids so it wasn't a distraction. Considering that this happened under Redknapp when Sherwood was closely involved with the 1st team, I was hoping Tim would realise the importance of rotating the squad properly but sadly he appears to have repeated the mistakes of Avb.
Was it really necessary to play 7 players ie rose, dawson, verts, naughton, bentaleb, capoue and paulinho for the whole 90 minutes on Thursday on an energy sapping pitch plus the 3000 mile travelling time and then expect a high level of performance with just 2 day recovery time?
Why couldn't fryers/ velkovic /kane have played , could they have been any worse considering we lost anyway?
And the fact that eriksen was only used as a sub and then didn't even make it on the pitch yesterday was a joke.
For those saying we should go all out to win the europa now , do you really think the players care enough about it to win? I can't remember any europa performances that make me think we are good enough to win, even under avb when we played the dregs of europe.
