Yes - unless (unlikely) they thought that he was being badly coached there. It will also, perhaps, allow him to mentally adjust to the challenge of moving to a new country and the most competitive league in the world.

Plus a year to learn English if he hasn't already. This may be why we've loaned Jack Clarke back to Leeds, though I've never heard him speak so probably a bit harsh
Judging by his haircut Jack Clarke speaks Yorkshire only.

I’m of the opinion that my life is a meaningless vacuum of sound until ITK sort their shit out and serve me up some mindfulness nectar

Haha, i just want this deal to happen a lot and the longer theres no itk I feel we have hope, Im really glad nobody has come in and said not happening because hopefully its all hush hush atm.

Both bids should be accepted then let the player decide.
I assume that our people will be telling him what's going on up the road - captain refusing to go on tour, protest marches, financial concerns, downward spiral and much more likely to change manager (if UE does well without being backed he will probably leave and he'll be fired if things get much worse :). 5th or 6th again will probably match expectations on both sides and mean that he gets a 3rd season).

If he doesn't go back on loan then the only thing in their favour is that their defence is so much worse than ours so he'll more likely get minutes...

The worst case scenario here is that we don't get the player but we've made Arsenal up their game and pay more up front than they wanted to for a player they won't have until next year, reducing their options for other signings in this window.

At the very least we made a competitor pay more than they are comfortable for when they are on a very limited budge. Competitive strategies 101.

The only reason he may see Arsenal as a better option is simply because he'll be afforded a clearer path to first team sooner. It's possible we may lose Toby this/next year, but he still has Sanchez and Jan (who I think has at least 2 more years with us) in the mix too to compete with. He may not care too much about us being a better overall prospect because it's possible he see's both of us as a stepping stone club to either Barca or Real.

I made this point a few posts above

Even if Toby left he would be behind Jan, Sanchez, Foyth and even Dier

Jan is the last year. Think it was extended.

He’s also 18, a kid. Who knows what he thinks?

@Bulletspur:

I seem to recall that you live in Canada so I'll explain. British people rather snootilly tend to think that all other English speaking countries have funny accents. However, within the UK, people from London and the South East tend to think that the rest of country (almost all to the North) have funny accents to the point of theirs being a different language. Just a gentle joke that we Londoners make quite a lot :)

Well except if you pronounce John as 'Jan' for example. Jan is short for Janice which is a girl's name FFS !!

And bottle is not pronounced 'battle' otherwise it would mean a fight between two armies. Jeeeeezus Fking Christ !!

(I'm joking btw - just in case, y'know)

I saw on Arsenalmania that L'equipe claim Spurs are keen on Saliba but the player prefers Arsenal. If true, you wonder why we bothered entering the bidding process, unless we are being played by St Etienne and the agent to get them both a better deal from Arsenal, but you'd think Levy is smarter than that!

Edit. It’s old news!

They are holding onto that one line from 3 weeks ago.

For me I can only think of two reasons levy would do this one being far more likely than the other 1. We've contacted his agent and player himself and he is interested in the move or 2. Less likely levy is trying to make Woolwich spend even more of their already low budget on a player they can't use this season, as you say Levy's smart and surely would of contacted the player before a bid was made

If he goes there over us I will presume either we dropped out or were never actually in it and just wanted to f with them.

Pros for joining us

Better stadium
Champions League
French Captain + Sissoko and Ndombele
Better CBs to learn from
Better manager to learn from
Better training facilities

Pros for joining them

Higher wage ceiling (although that won't impact him for now)
More likely to play quickly
History of French success (before he was old enough to watch)
More trophies (ditto)
