Manchester City have stolen a march on Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign Anzhi Makhachkala's Willian by making a £35 million bid for the player, according to reports in Brazil.

Willian only signed for Anzhi in Januray 2013, arriving for a fee of £30m from Ukrainian Premier League side Shakhtar Donetsk.

Both Spurs and City are believed to have been close to making a bid of their own for Willian in the last transfer window, before being out-muscled by Anzhi's financial firepower.

Willian has now been made available for transfer by Anzhi owner Suleyman Kerimov.

The Russian billionaire has decided to address recent failings on the pitch with a sensational fire sale of what he sees as the club's overpaid and underperforming stars.

As a further part of Kerimov's restructuring process, former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen is also expected to be replaced as manager, after just two games in charge.

City now appear to be the most likley destination for Willian, who seems destined to leave Anzhi this transfer window.

Were he to join the Manchester club, the Brazil international attacking midfielder would meet up with former Shakhtar team-mate Fernadinho, who signed for City in June for £30m.

Willian has played 17 matches for Anzhi, scoring one goal and providing six assists.

If true it's another dumb move by City.

Why would they pay more for him now?

I posted a thread in Spurs Chat the other day to discuss the possibility of a total squad overhaul were Bale to be sold and received a number of derisive Funny ratings for the trouble, one person even suggested I was drug addled.

If Bale does go, though, I don't see what choice we have. Replacing his production would require at least two class attacking players coming in not to mention the holes that need to be filled in defense. We have not broken our transfer record twice already this window just to take a step back.

Levy and ENIC's whole plan had been to get the stadium built, raise the valuation of the club and sell it on for a massive profit. We're only going to be able to finance it with a huge sponsorship agreement, and we'll need have semi-regular CL football in order to have the exposure to find such a partner. We're close to that level now and allowing Bale to leave without getting proper replacements in would represent a major setback.

As others have mentioned there are a number of class players available at Levy-friendly prices. United will let Nani go for way less than he's worth, Ljajic is gettable for 12m Euros, Bernard has a reasonable buy-out clause, and Willian is available as a part of a fire sale. Really the only WF we'd have to massively shell out for is Lamela. If Bale goes I fully expect us to being in two of the aforementioned on top of Coentrao and another cb at least.

Couldn't agree with this post more, especially the bit in bold. What would be the point in paying £26m for a 28 year old striker if we then went on to sell Gareth Bale without reinvesting some or most of the money? We want success this season and our dealings so far have shown that, especially Soldado. This makes me very confident that we will get the quality that we need in if Bale departs.

I have to agree, this would be a massive gamble in respect of the fee being thrown around.

I would first have to question his commitment be electing to go to Anzhi at the start of the year.

Along with the fact that he is not part if the international squad, and the 5 or 6 years he spent at Shakhtar weren't exactly outstanding, I would not touch him.

He could very easily turn out to be absolute mustard, but he could also end up another Aquilani. Man Citeh can afford a £35m gamble like this, I don't feel that we can.

35M Pounds?! WTF?
They can have him.

If we are having to shop at that price I can see better players out there. He will get next to no game time at City I would have thought, but if he just wants to chase the money... though of course I appreciate this is all rumour oh and Anzhi are more likely to accept a 35m bid over anything we can offer, so the player might not have much of a choice.

All paper talk of course, but no way worth 35m - we didn't want him at 30m in January so not likely to pay more now.

You would have thought Anzhi would be taking a hit on their purchases as all squad up for sale, not potentially making a profit

you're massively underrating him. i agree that £35m is ridiculous but maybe they've just plucked that figure out of thin air and he'd actually be available for much less.

Now that Bernard has signed for SD then i really hope we get some ITk on this guy as i still feel our squad could really do with a Willian or a Ljajic.

He was desperate to leave Shaktar, with one of the reasons being that Brazilian players plying their trade in the Ukranian/Russian leagues tend to get overlooked, Fernandinho being another example. Anzhi were the only option for Willian as they were the only team to meet his release clause, he was absolutely oustanding for Shaktar and I can still remember him tearing Arsenal a new one a few seasons back in the CL, his performances dipped when he had some internal wrangling with Shaktar when he claims they promised to let him leave but didn`t. You are massively underating him and he would be exactly the type of player that would have us fans drooling should we ever manage to get him.

Willian is a great player but I could only see us spending £35million on him if we are all of a sudden flushed with a fuck truck of cash from the Bale sale...

Options are running out. Bernard to SD (gutted), and Willian possibly to City, leaves Ljajic and Lamela as possible alternatives for the wing forward role, should Bale depart.

Some accounts have Ljajic wanting to go to Milan(?) and Roma will not let Lamela go without a fight.
