This is the only thread I want to see active right now as it's the only one that is in reference to solutions, rather than bickering over what the problem is and how entrenched it is.

Even a caughtoffsides article linking us to Zlatan would be awesome right about now.

If you're looking for solutions in the Jan window I've a feeling you're gonna end up disappointed

Rather, I view it as indication of how desperately little hope there is in recognizable improvement anytime soon.

Lacazette, Cabaye, Milner, Shawcross, Depay, Bony, Benteke

Would be my targets for Jan, if we could get 3 of them it could make a positive difference to our season.
any one of those on paper should improve the team but we said that about lamela, paulinio and soldado. why to players sign for spurs and becaome bad almost overnight.

Looking at the characters in our squad, I'd absolutely love to have James Milner at this point. Winner, always gives it his all and I feel like he'd command a lot of respect from other players while providing a great leader by example. Before this year, I might have been against it, but seeing now how much our character on the pitch needs addressed, Milner could be a player we can really lean on to get others playing with the same desire he does.

Because it isn't about the individual talents. We signed decent to good players each in their own right, but left other positions unaddressed and some of the positions we did address we chose options who were either incompatible with the squad or with the league itself. We made some very, very poor decisions in the summer of 2013.

Milner is the one we need.
I miss Scott parker.
The leader we want is not the good speaker, we need hardworking leader without a word.

Gettable players in January would be someone like shawcross. He'd be my number 1 target.

Need to raise funds before we can buy though unfortunately.

I was thinking about our summer purchases, and had a real chuckle.

Poch wanted Musacchio, Argentinian CB - got Fazio, a Argentinian poor-man's version of Musacchio

Poch wanted Schneiderlin, French MF - got Stambouli, a French poor-man's version of Schneiderlin

We could have gone for Shaw, English LB - we got Davies, an British poor-man's version of Shaw

I am sensing a trend here - Levy must think that he just needs to find a player that matches/resembles the nationality of the player Poch wants/needs, and Poch (and fans) will never be able to tell the difference.

Agree, but it shouldn't be this way.

There are quality, team changing players available in Jan. We just have to be bold enough to go out and get them.

A player like Cabaye for example would probably have an enormous impact on any PL team he walks into in Jan, and would certainly be available if a team were to make the correct approach to signing him.

Wouldn't mind putting in a cheeky bid for Zakaria Bakkali, his contract run outs in the summer of 2015 and would be a fantastic signing, young and very talented. He is like a small Memphis Depay.

So many people in this thread talking about attacking midfielders, pacy wingers, replacements for our strikers yet it is our shambolic defense that is killing us.

it's a mixture. A more threatening attack would ease the pressure on defence. It would also mean that we could play the lovely passing, retention game that we're pretty good at when we don't desperately need to score goals.

Agree that the defense also needs looking at though.

Cabaye would be awesome, would get stuck in more than Capoue and can play a lot, him and Mason might seem a bit lightweight but I reckon it could work. Zero chance of it though as he'll be too pricey. We've got a lot of problems but CM is a big one for me, I don't know why we bought Stambouli, but currently the midfield offers so little protection to our rubbish defence but on the flipside isn't giving the ball to the attackers in particularly dangerous positions, or quickly enough. The perennial issue is that a proper CM is going to cost us big money..

I wanted cabaye in when we sold modric but we went for dembele. Cabaye was the perfect replacement at the time.

People need to stop bringing up Musacchio, he was an impossible purchase. The rumours are that if Spurs paid the third parties what they wanted, and paid Villareal what they wanted, then he would have cost us £40m, making him by far and away the most expensive defender in Premier League history. When Musacchio explained why he "snubbed" Spurs he even explained that the terms on offer to Villarreal were unacceptable. Musacchio is a good defender, but in no way justifies such an enormous price tag.

And Shaw never would have come to us.He cost Man utd £30m for christ sakes, when has a club of our size ever bought a left back for £30m?

Where would the money have come from to spend £70m on 2 defenders?

You are living in la la land if you think that it would have been possible to sign either one of those players, let alone both.

Read the post again - nowhere did I say we should have spent money on any of those three players - just noticed that the nationality of the players were (nearly) identical to the players we ended up getting. It was amusing to me, so I chuckled. Nothing more nefarious than that.

Oh, and - Musacchio.

What I am saying is that if those were the two players that Pochettino listed, with zero alternatives, then he was a fucking idiot.

Isn't this something we fall down on? I'm sure there's been several incidents where players have mentioned us making odd approaches or clubs have said they'll never deal with us again.

But yes, Cabaye would be brilliant.
