Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo has been named the Fifa World Player of the Year for 2008 during a glittering awards ceremony in Zurich.
The Portuguese superstar sees his achievements from the 2007/08 season rewarded with football's most prestigious individual honour.
He has already claimed the FIFPro World Player of the Year title and the highly-regarded Ballon d'Or crown, but has now added the top prize to his ever-growing roll of honour.
Ronaldo scored an incredible 42 goals for Sir Alex Ferguson's men last term, helping them to Premier League and UEFA Champions League glory.
The 23-year-old becomes the first player from the English top-flight to take the award and succeeds AC Milan playmaker Kaka as the best player on the planet.
Ronaldo also emulates the achievement of his countryman Luis Figo who took the prize in 2001.
Meanwhile, Brazil international Marta was named Fifa Women's World Player of the Year.

He won the league, champions league, golden shoe, European player of the year and world player of the year, yet some people still think Messi is better?

Right decision. Messi is the best in the world at the moment for me. But he missed too much of last season. Ronaldo hasn't been at his best so far this season though, and Messi has been on fire. He's getting better and better too. And he doesn't play act either. Class act all the way.

But Ronaldo does deserve it for last year.

Fair play to Ronaldo last year he was superb. Fully deserves all the acolades. But i dont think this will be his year, he doesn't seem over the moon to still be in Manchester.

I dont think that there is much doubt that Messi is the better player of the 2, but the simple facts are Ronaldo had a far better 2008. How could anyone even consider otherwise when you look at what Ronaldo won and how many scored (42 goals, CL, PL, World club championship).

p.s. That John Terry (fcukwit) is a bitter twat aint he. He voted Ronny 3rd behind Xavi and Torres. Nothing to do with the fact that he was pipped tothe 2 bigger prizes by Ronny's team eh.....

Wonder what the "invalid vote" entries are? And one "no vote" for third place from the UAE

The good folk of Timor-Leste thought Fat Frank was worth a 2nd place too

Looking at that list it looks very close between Ronaldo and Messi. What i did find interesting was the Pakistan vote for first choice being an invalid vote

Arshavin got a fair few votes. Also noted a lot of bias towards fellow club players.
