Would we benefit from selling Modric this summer?

First off, this isn't to irritate anyone more than they already are but a serious question I've got, so if you still can't stand the thought of selling Luka Modric (as most of us couldn't last summer) then this thread probably isn't for you.

We all know we can't have a situation like last summer with Modric being so public about his desire to leave and, whilst I believe it was Levy and not Redknapp that kept him here, I'm sure once Harry goes then Modric will start thinking of leaving too, top 4 or no top 4.

But, outside of the financial gain that comes with selling arguably our best player, will there be any other benefits?

One I was thinking of could be getting more from Rafa VdV. If we sell Modric and played 4231, with Sandro, Parker, THudd or Livermore occupying the holding positions, would this allow Rafa to be an even greater contributor? I really think he makes us tick, more so than Modric of late and with his obvious love for Spurs I think we should be looking to build around him. So would Rafa benefit from Modric going? Would we need to replace him like for like? I honestly can't see him staying past this season.

Once again, just to inflame and discuss a thought I had, not to irritate!

Modric seems to be making it blatently obvious that he does not want to be at Spurs by his recent performances, or lack of more to the point.

Getting the best price we can for him and investing it wisely is the best way forward. We know that Daniel Levy will do the former, but TBH it's the latter that worries me.

One things for sure we're not big enough as a club to carry players that don't want to play for us. Modric wants to be somewhere else his performances of late has clearly shown that IMO. anything above 25M-30M realistically is a good price we as a club can't afford to keep players wanting to leave, it's the dripping effect it has on moral that can distroy a club. If he wants to stay that fine but we seriously have to adjust a system that gets him playing consistantly...442 is not the answer.

Replacing Modric would be difficult but can be done with a different sort of player ie a goal scoring alrounder (easier said than done)

Get into a bidding war between Man U, Man City and Chelsea.

Get maximum value.

Go back to our policy pre-Redknapp of bringing them in young. Buy as many prospects under the ages of 21 as possible. Employ damn good coach.

Restart.

Watching him recently has left me very disappointed. So yes I think cashing in on him this summer and using the money to try and lure someone of a similar ilk would probably be the best course of action.

I would sell him, and I think it's important not to get too carried away with the idea that we would need an absolute like for like replacement. If we invested the money into a centre back and attacker, whether that would be a striker or good quality attacking midfielder who could play from the right or through the middle (Dempsey really coming to mind) then that would be an excellent use of the situation. What is clear, is that he has been very poor taking his high standards into account since the turn of the year.

Yes, I think we could benefit. I think VdV would be a lot more effective as our creative midfielder in the right formation...
Sandro Parker
Lennon VdV Bale
Adebayor

Yesterday, I was willing Redknapp to substitute Modric.

If it means we have to sacrifice him to bring in a top striker and a young hungry creative midfielder (Ganso/Eriksen/Sahin/etc) then I'm all for it. Set our price before hand and a dead line for buying clubs to do the deal then sell him, if not keep him.....

I doubt we will get £40m for him now, but replacements are out there, its just that where we finish will determine who we can get in.

Time he was gone, like everyone else I am fed up watching his mediocre performances. He also needs to be dropped for the remainder of the season.

Yes its time to go, he's been going through the motions for the second part of the season and he's been well advised. Did well first half of the season so people think he's professional and has handled the disappointment of not getting his dream move maturely.

Second half of the season he has taken his foot off the gas and lately he doesn't even deserve to start. But his camp have obviously played this well enough, he'll get his move this summer and I don't think I would even start him against QPR.

This is the reaction his camp probably want as it takes the pressure off Levy trying to keep him.

Sell him to the highest bidder, in fact sell him to City.

That's exactly the way we should line up at QPR....

After last summer I always thought he would leave this summer whether we got CL or not. To get 4 years out of a player of his quality in this day & age with only one season of CL, is about right, sadly.

If Modric and bale leave and we replace them with top quality players but our manager is still redknapp, I'm afraid there will not be much difference. We will see the same pattern repeats itself and the top quality replacements would want away to bigger clubs as we remain the nearly team that plays well in patches but self destruct when it matters.
The most importably business our club has to do is get in a capable new manager.

He has been rubbish for months and I agree he should be dropped but no way in hell will he be.

I would sell him to city for stupid money, they will soon grow tired of him and move on to the next big superstar anyway.
