To cut to the chase how do people see Younes Kaboul's future at Spurs, and how would you handle his inclusion (or not) in our defence over the coming months and season(s)?

To get it out of the way, I think that when fit he's the best centre-back at our club bar none, Vertonghen included. However, I am beginning to have serious concerns about his long-term fitness - he's been out of the side for the best part of a year now, and although he's apparently now training again we still haven't had any indication that he's anywhere near ready for any first team action any time soon. There have been various hints from ITKs that his injury problems may be of a chronic variety and therefore even when next he gets himself fit enough to be in first team contention, there may be the suspicion that another lengthy spell on the sidelines will always be just around the corner for him.

Without having any insider knowledge as to his injury and long-term fitness situation myself it's hard to form a definitive opinion, but if the rumours of potential chronic injury problems have any truth to them then I would [very reluctantly] have to conclude that we should look to sell him, as harsh a stance as that may be. For the last few seasons we have all seen the effect of regularly chopping and changing our defensive personnel as we accommodated Ledley whenever he was fit, and regularly switched things round to bring a replacement CB into the team on the many occasions where he wasn't. As majestic as King was whenever he was fit enough to turn out for us, I'd suggest that if we'd had a competent (evidently inferior to Ledley) but fit pair of central defenders who could be relied upon to partner each other in the majority of games, our defence might have been better than it was for having the brilliance of Ledley one week and then A.N.Other filling in for him (in a defensive line that didn't have the familiarity of playing together every week) the next. And as much as I think a fit Kaboul is a fantastic defender, equally he's no Ledley King. Better to have an 8/10 defender who'll be there every week than a 9-10/10 defender who'll play once every 3 or 4 games, IMO.

Obviously all of the above is based on the assumption that Kaboul won't be able to get back to playing to his former standards for sustained runs of games in the future - I would love that to be all wrong and to see Younes leading our defence out for years to come, and that may indeed happen.

What do you guys think? Will Kaboul ever recover to form and long-term fitness? And if he doesn't, should we stick by him and play him when we can, or should we look for other options?

Top cb but have a touch of the ledley king, and we should look for a top class cb to replace him as a starter to pair up with jan.

If kaboul gets back to full fitness then great we have 3 top cb's, but if he dont we still have jan and a new classy cb to give us the strength and stability we need in defense.

3? your counting Dawson as part of that three? he's been a good servant to the club and given his all etc but he's not great or a top centre back. imo of course.

I'm sure I read on an earlier thread he's in his last year, if that's the case, given his injury record, we can expect zero interest

Kaboul, King, Woodgate, Carr, we seem to have a habit of crippling top class defenders!

The fact that he made a 'comeback' but broke down again, and has been out for a long time again really concerns me. It's hard for a player to rediscover his previous form after two big setbacks. I really hope he can though as he was immense at his best.

Kaboul will be fine! This season he will put the doubts to rest! Vidic came back from a similar amount of time out and AVB likes to rotate his CBs so the strain won't be too much!

If Kaboom has chronic injuries, I doubt Caulker would have been sold. Let's presume our management team know what they are doing.

Many players come back from a knee injury and pick up a hammy injury too.

No one is gonna buy him off us or pay him what we're paying him, so all we can do is hope he has no further setbacks, even if he's a bit-part player from now on, he's well worth having around.

I don't believe the chronic injury rumours.

He came back from a knee operation and picked up a couple of unrelated muscular injuries.

It's been Ramadan and so he's been fasting for the past month, may have had something to do with it too.

Genuinely don't think we would have sold Caulker if the club thought Kaboul was a long way from fitness. They obviously envision him playing a part this season.

Even if the Vlad deal hadn't gone tits-up, we'd still be a CB light, so I don't believe that Kaboul's problems are so severe as to be career-threatening. That said, I'm pretty sure he'll be eased back into the team.

Great someone else is with me.

I just can't believe that what seems to be the majority of the forum have written Kaboul off based on some injury itk. Give the lad a chance FFS. He had a nasty injury, and will be back soon. The guy is absolute class, even if he can never reach 100% he will still be one of the best in the league. And for those that want to compare to king, just remember that king injured himself in his first ever game for us! We didn't write him off, and he made a pretty decent career for himself! If Kaboul can go on to be even half the player king was then I would be delighted.

Nicdic, glad you mention Ramadan, saw that on his twitter and thought it could explain why he hasn't played pre season considering he's had a year off.
