Having only seen older footage, and being a fellow country man have to be Blanchflower for me historicilly. Just the complete footballer, you could put him anywhere and he would do a job. Honestly in todays world he would be worth well over £100m.

In my lifetime it’s hard to pick, King, Ginola or Sonny.

Sorry but you’re talking about a pure myth. He scored 3 goals for Leeds in their title year. 3. This idea that he won the title for them is utter nonsense.

he was a good player, with an aura and an eye for a big goal (though never in Europe or for France as I said) but never as good as his legend and close to Gazza? No chance
I'm really not, I'm old enough to remember it well. Didn't say he was close to Gazza, but disagreed with his not being important. Also check out the Leeds doc "do you want to win" to understand his impact.

Surprised to see Klinsmann pop up a fair bit. Only played one season, then fucked off to Bayern. He clearly used us as a springboard.

I can’t pick one, so I’ve gone with the idea of a championship belt. Who’s my favourite spurs player, when they leave you pick a new one. I’ve been watching since the early 80s so I’ve gone:

Hoddle (81-87)
Waddle (87-89)
Gascoigne (89-92)
Anderton (92-04)
Ledley (04-12)
Bale (12-13)
Vertonghen (13-20)
Kane (20-23)
Bentancur (23-)

toughest call - Mousa or Jan in 2013. Thought about Maddison, Mickey and Udogie for now as well
toughest omission - i was very early on the Modric hype train, absolutely loved him

A few other shout outs for people who were great for shorter spells or who I just liked more than the average fan

Chris Hughton
Richard Gough
Paul Stewart’s midfield season
Steffen Freund
Gomes
Rafa VDV

Oh and there was a centre back I really liked in the late 90s but I can’t remember his name for some reason

The original OP was that he was above Gazza. I’m not saying he wasn’t good, but I do think the myth is greater than the player. Leeds were top when he joined, it’s not like he turned their season around

Ledley remains the best player ive ever seen in a Spurs shirt. Bale, Modric, Ginola, Kane, Son all incredible but I maintain King is the best I’ve seen.

however the player who brought me the most joy every time they stepped on the pitch was Van Der Vaart. I absolutely loved what he brought on the pitch. So is probably my favourite player

Waddle.

An absolute magician with a ball at his feet.
agreed. His last couple of years at spurs, time in Marseille and first year at Sheff Weds is as good as I’ve seen an English player over that kind of period. He was as good as his haircut was bad

It's true, but he really caught the imagination. Not just as a player, but the way he conducted himself and embraced the club. He was the first bonafide 'world star' in my Spurs-supporting life.

He was 29 and asked sugar how ambitious he was going to be and got the answer he didn’t want. Also that summer we sold Popescu(never replaced) and Barmby. Couldn’t really blame klinsmann

Overall probably Sonny.
However I think Ledley, Rafa, Dele, klinsmann and Gazza all deserve a mention proper spurs players.

Ledley for me. His breakthrough around the turn of the century was when I was really getting into football as a teenager.

When he was fit and able he was in a class of his own. I don't doubt that injury free he would've been one of the greatest defenders of all time.

When I was in primary school, I got obsessed with Gerard McMahon after seeing him play once and thinking he was amazing. Spent every week hoping he would get into the team - he never did really. I suppose he couldn't have actually been all that! Anyone remember much about him?
You made me laugh out loud this morning. Since I share his surname, I had huge hopes for Gerry, but he kind of disappeared after we bought him and then left for Stoke within a year of making his debut, I think - mid-90s.
