A few of the faves that excited when I first found out:

Davids
Dos Santos
Huddlestone
Lamela
VDV
Carrick
Lloris
Dalmat

Although I got excited about every new signing when I was little so it's hard to pick a selection!

I've never had least favourite player before they signed, but I have been left underwhelmed by signings;

Frazier Campbell because of what it meant and the difference in quality.
Yedlin- controversially perhaps.
Khumalo
...

Huddlestone is an interesting one, 17 I think when we signed him but was still very young (made his debut at 15 iirc) and very raw (he was being played as both a CM and CB and Burley wasn't decided on his best position.

Agree with VDV had been one of my most rated / liked players for years but was always in a league above us so never even really dreamt he would have signed...until he did.

I was pretty excited about Bale tbh, had seen a couple of early Wales games where I thought he looked a talent (including when he scored a freekick).

Favourite:

Klinsmann (told my mate to fuck off winding me up)
VDV (jumping round the flat like a madman reading the BBC live text)
Lloris (came over and over again, didn't believe it until I saw him in the shirt)
+ Berbatov
+ Modric

Least favourite:

Adebayor
Gallas
Crouch

I remember thinking Jonathan Blondel would be a cracker of a signing and was also pretty chuffed at us winning the race for John Bostock who was widely coveted.

A friends dad was a derby fan and raved about his ability on the ball, because of this I watched a bit of him and just thought he was going to be the next big thing in English football. I loved technical players and he fit the bill.

Oh I actually I forgot- the signing I got most excited about was RIvaldo. Was going mental as a kid on holiday as me and my dad made regular trips to an internet Cafe to see the latest and to see it getting apparently closer. Shame it didnt fucking happen though. So I guess it doesnt really count.

Loved
Klinsmann
Lloris
Vertonghen

Disliked
Adebayor
Bent
Pavlyuchenko

Players we've been linked to and that I didn't want
Benteke
Konoplyanka
Damiao

I can see from this list that I have an out-of-this-world expectation for new strikers.

Changed my mind:

Favourite:

Moutinho
Damiao
Rivaldo

Damiao was my least favourite, just didnt get the hype. Which has since been justified.

Rivaldo though, as mentioned above, had me going crazy. It would have been insane.

My nightmare signing was thankfully averted when Hartson failed his medical. £7.5m for that useless lump by that **** Graham.

Easily the most excited by Klinsmann, Dumitrescu and Popescu - but then I was 13!

best signing was Jurgen all day long.

we went from a joke to prime time news overnight. was mental.

Worst. Frazier Campbell would take some beating for sheer head in hands 'what have you done levy?' despair.

According to wikipedia:

Damião was hugely criticized due to his lack of agility and pace, plus his inability to score on a regular basis.

Glad we didn't spend over £20m on that guy!

I remember being very excited about Steffan Iverson. Was about the time I first started going to football myself but didn't know much about football outside England and I bought hook line and sinker the whole "this is the kid they want all over Europe" line.

I remember being stunned when it was announced that we were signing Klinnsman.

I punched the sofa when I heard that we had hired Harry Redknapp.
