England's 2018 World Cup bid has been "significantly harmed" by a newspaper investigation into the bidding process, says a key member of the campaign team.

A member of the Fifa executive committee previously claimed there would be no backlash against England.

But it now seems the Sunday Times probe into two members of the committee has left England with a mountain to climb ahead of the vote on 2 December.

"It has significantly harmed England's bid," a senior member told BBC Sport.

With four weeks to go to the decision, England's bid team has not given up all hope of turning the situation around.

But senior sources say that the prospect of any future media investigations into the conduct of Fifa officials - including a potential Panorama programme on the BBC - could be fatal for their chances.

I think this just shows how morally and ethically bankrupt FIFA are. Just because most of the members are from banana republics doesn't mean they should be holding our free press against us. I thought the bid was supposed to be on which country is best suited to hold a football tournament not which countries won't prove that their grubby little palms need greasing.

This will just give Blatter and the rest of anti-anglo cronies the excuse to pass us for another 2 world cups.

I don't see what the big deal is personally, we can't afford them anyway.

They'll go to Russia and we'll all have one absolutely huge fucking party!

Yep. It's been a grubby application so far. I'd rather England didn't get it.

Agreed.
My predictions, for what they're worth:
2018 - Russia
2022 - USA
2026 - China
2030 - England

Why should USA get another one, they've really only just had one (well 1994).

I agree, though I'd take issue wth you that a gap of 28 years is "...only just had one."
My reasoning is that China has already said it will likely bid for 2026. FIFA will for sure want it to go there... for many reasons. So, as it can't go to the same continent twice in succession... and the USA is the only non-Asian country bidding for 2022... well there's my reasoning.

Because a US world cup = money for FIFA. This is shown by the fact that Wembley would be the 13th largest stadium in the US by capacity. USA 1994 still holds the attendance record and the last 4 world cups have had 12 more games.

But surely it's not the money that will be made by a world cup that's important it's the the grubby cash paid to individuals up front that wins bids, isn't that what we've learned over the last year?

That's basically it. People seem to be whinging left right and centre about the timing of the Panorama show but if Fifa is crooked to the bone it should be exposed now so that it can be sorted out not delayed just so we can get the World Cup before doing the right thing.

If anything the whole process should be delayed whilst Fifa sorts out this entire fucking mess. But that would involve the likes of Jack Warner accepting that there is a problem...which considering he is the problem is unlikely to happen.

You cannot name three people involved in the vote on Thursday and accuse them of corruption, then name another member involved in the vote and accuse them, again, of selling tickets on the black market and expect them to then vote for the country who's media is making the allegations.

Is it right that our media are reporting on this. Absolutely.

Is it wrong the FIFA officials are allegedly involved in corruption. Absolutely.

My issue is with the timing - this could easily have been reported on next week and it would still have gotten the same level of publicity.

I seriously doubt we will host a world cup in my lifetime.

You put them in the spotlight now when everyone's watching. If you do it after the vote, no one will give a shit and FIFA can sweep it under the carpet.

Do it a month ago when the information was disclosed to the Panorama team and the storm was still brewing on the Sunday Times stuff.

Not three days before the vote.

To be fair to the journalist involved he's been trying to get these allegations aired for years and has been doing alot of work trying to expose the corruption in Fifa.

As has been said now is the best time because everyone is looking. Fifa obviously needs to be cleaned up and England getting the World Cup isn't more important than that.

The bottom line is that these grubby little shits should not be in a postion to vote on a world cuo bid, I wasn't sure whether they should have aired the programme before but having seen the last 15 minutes of it last night I am convinced that it was right to do so.
Fifa should be closed down and an entirely new association begun in it's place.
When asked about the Jack Warner selling tickets on the black market Sepp Blatter clearly knew all about it but his response was if it is refered to him by the official FIFA means they would look at it, when asked nobody at FIFA knew what these official sources were, I guess it would have to come from the official CONCACAF representative on the commitee, oh wait that's Jack Warner.

The whole organisation stinks from top to bottom!
