This sentence:

" Damião has already proved himself to be worth much more than €20 million."

In particular the words "more", "than" and "€20m" are the words that make me fear that we will not sign him.

Because we reportedly bid around £18m last season. Inter rejected and maybe DL wasn't sure if LD was worth £20m+. He gave him 1 extra season to develop and is now defo worth the money. It's fine buying potential like Aaron Lennon for £1m but paying £20m+ for potential is not in our nature.

And nor should it be.

If Damiao looked that promising there would have been a plethora of european clubs bidding for him last summer. I doubt if we bid more than the 11m quoted by Inter's chairman today, and nor should we have, because he was a gamble on various levels and if we had bid 20m, plus his wages, if it went wrong we would be on the wrong end of a 35-40m pill. And this is not an option for a club in our position. The wrongest deal we've ever done (I believe) was Bentley, and that deal has probably cost us about 25m less any fee we end up with. A club who made a pre tax profit of just 600k last year cannot afford to take many hits like that. Just about every major deal has to make financial sense. Paying market value or over market value for players yet to fulfil potential would be mental and end up with us becoming......yes I'm going to say it again......Leeds.

It's better to buy 10 Aaron Lennon's for 1m and hope just one makes the grade, that buy 1 Bentley and he doesn't.

Or Levy has got a figure that is in their ballpark and they're now negotiating how much of it is addons and what those might be. It could be we pay 20 million euros outright and the rest is made up on performance addons and clauses.

Opening negotiation gambit. Why say "much more than €20m" instead of "around/at least €25m (or whatever amount)"

Levy has offered £11m according to reports, whats that? About €15m? Not too far away already.

I prefer Ade over LD, but ideally we'll get both (wishful thinking)

Daws is with UA now iirc.
I thought Benny buys his own boots? Wasn't there a story about that and him wearing odd boots?

Bought his own to start. He then wore Puma for a few years (as they were the kit sponsor). Then a couple of years ago he signed with Adidas.

I honestly don't want to sound like I'm dismissing the quality of the Brazilian league, but exactly how far can a striker be said to have 'proven' himself to be worth that much before doing it in Europe?

Trouble is, if we want to compete with the big boys, we've got to spend big. One or two "star" signings and we're good to go, with maybe a couple of cheaper, young players.
We can't rely on getting bargains like Sandro, and I've no idea how we snapped him up so cheaply.
Spend a wad on LD, get Ade and AVB's marquee signing from Porto. At the moment €20m on Leandro doesn't seem too bad a price. Who else could we get for that amount?

I do wonder if there isn't a deal to be done for Dzeko (sp)?
He's got to accept that he's not going to get near his wage at most clubs, it depends on how much he'll drop by and how much City would want.

Bromavinci will hate me and wish I burn in hell forever, but aren't Bayern in for Dzeko?

I'm beginning to think similarly of strikers from the premier league. The ridiculousness of the euro elitism when it comes to football is without bounds. These guys play good football over there.

Oscar goes for 25m and figures like 80m are quoted for hulk and we balk at 20m for Leandro. We don't deserve him if we aren't willing to pay.

Im not sure if it is just me but i am SOOOO excited for this season regardless of the lack of strikers!!!

yes we have lost king (but he wasnt the same player last year and Kaboom has stepped up)

we have Bale who has signed a new deal and is a WORLD CLASS PLAYER that any team in the world would LOVE.

Modric will either go (for a lot of money and we will spend the money....99% sure ) or we will keep a world class player!!

we WILL sign atleast one more striker at somepoint even if they are not here for newcastle.

I think its important that we do not rush and buy a 2 choice striker just to have him here two weeks before we could get our first choice. Our club is one of the best run clubs in Europe and thats down to Levi and the board, so I think Its important that we all realise we must trust this guy and let him do his work his way as for the most part it has worked and we are improving bit by bit regardless of set backs (modric, berba, harry, ect!!)

Lets sit back and enjoy the show called ITK but not panic too much that nothing happens before Newcastle. (let the dislike button/dumb bashing commence )

€20M is under £15.9 currently, which sounds fairly plausible. Who knows what currency the agent actually used or meant though.

yeah £16 million is probably overpaying, for a prospect. But it's fair in today's market considering Internacional don't have to sell. £20m is the most I would pay for him though. We can't afford to fork out that much money for a potential player when Huntelaar is available for less.

Well it would be helpful if he meant R20M ;)

No I remember a brazilian chairmen saying they work in euros as they have to sell players to europe and iirc the confusion starts with ESPN converting figures to $'s and £'s

BC your obsessed with wages, it's almost as if you think no other club has to pay them apart from us! How much do you calculate that David Bentleys transfer cost us, or Darren Bent or even Modric. Fact is players cost money and wages. Buying a striker for £20m and 80k a week isn't going to turn us into Leeds, even Aston villa afforded this for Bent!

Just relax
