Isn't Champions League good for about £25-30m of additional income?

Say you spend £22m on Soldado with variables that can reach £30m.

You then pay him £100k/week (£5.2m/year)

If we end up getting 3-4 seasons of him banging in around 20 goals, that could really put us over the top and in my opinion makes us title challengers.

3-4 seasons = £100m on the low end of things for CL income.

-£30m if he meets the variables
-£5.2m x 4 years (£20.8m)

~ £49.2m profit off of a huge expenditure that could really be the tipping point for the club.

Nothing should ever be based on IF we get Champions League. That's Risdale economics. What IF we don't get Champions League?

Saying all this I would fucking love it if we signed Soldado.

My concern now is that if everyone knows we've bid we could find other bidders at the table tomorrow!

Reports suggest we've agreed terms with the player though so it seems we are a long way down the line, no reports of Liverpool having done this yet

If something seems too good to be true it probably is. There is no way I can see us spending that kind of money on a player, let alone a 28 year old with no sell on value. The top we spend on a player is 16 to 18m. This deal is completely out of line with our recent history and the financial realities of a club our size.

It would be in line though with the Itk we've had this summer that suggests the club are willing to spend big

I've told my bird ill take her on an amazing summer holiday if we get Soldado. Normally when I say things like this it bites me in the arse. I'm praying that I take her away. Bring me the soldier!

I think the fact that we're guaranteed an extra £30m a season over the next few, before CL even comes into it, would cover it simply enough. No need to overthink it.

Hmm... we've not agreed a fee :(

I'm just hoping Baldini has been the difference with Levy, convinced him that it's worth it.

Here's hoping.

Is his all round game (passing, technique, vision) really as good as Berba's?

He's more of a poacher than Berbatov was, but I would argue that his technique and vision are better, while his passing is good. His real talents lie in is movement and finishing, which is exactly what we need. While (although harder to tell due to the slower pace of La Liga) he is deceptively quick, not necessarily blisteringly so, but enough to get ahead of defenders, which he does well.

Yes but there are different circumstances this summer that have been done to death.

As they were when we qualified for the CL (and didn't spend 20m on a striker).

This just seems like one of those deals which we get carried away about because of the roller coaster ride that is the transfer window but if you step back and look at it rationally it seems very unlikely.

Just to play Devil's Advocate, if Soldado was okay with the move, all they really have to do is ask the agent what he agreed to with us.

Wait a minute. A Marca article....that DOESN'T mention Gareth Bale?
Bullshit.
It's like a Beatles album, got to play it backwards to find the hidden message. Look at the last paragraph again:

El Tottenham no es la única 'novia' que le ha salido a Soldado en Inglaterra. El Liverpool también sondea su fichaje pero parece que los 'spurs' se han apresurado en la operación y le han tomado ventaja. Yenom fo stol uoy evig ew. Laer rof ngis, elab hterag.
