This lineup should be better defensively but still effective on the break. A bit like how we used to play. It’s a simple lineup that makes sense.

The presence of Son and Lucas (and Aurier) suggests that West Ham have slow fullbacks - I've not seen them this season - and Mourinho has quick wide counter-attacking in mind.

In the absence of Eriksen, Lo Celso and Ndombele, a great deal of responsibility falls upon Dele to supply the creative spark.

Like others, I am hopeful that the presence of Dier can release Winks to perform a more attacking role and knit play together by keeping possession higher up the pitch.

If West Ham play a low block and try to defend in numbers at home, this could be a struggle in the absence of a proper no. 10. But they're more likely to be aggressive and press hard, which could work for us.

I would. We have a recognised dm in Dier. Even at his worst he's still more of a presence than Winks and Sissoko who just get steamrollered. Rose is on the bench as he's been so poor which is correct decision imo. Eriksen nowhere to be seen also as it should be. Who would you play out of curiosity?
We should remember he's only been here 5 mins so todays 11 isnt the shape of things to come for rest of the season.
Jesus Christ I'm sticking up for that twat Maureen! Its like some weird parallel universe. I feel dirty.

I think we would be screaming for GLC in all honesty but Ndombele is injured otherwise we would be screaming.

Its a solid team if unspectacular but like you say he has been here for five mins. We need to start collecting points and that will breed confidence. But in reality it isnt the team but how we play that would be interesting.

I think more importantly than the selection and tactics today is the mental side of the game.
Hopefully that is where Mourinho can make the biggest immediate impact. Motivation, concentration, determination.

Whats different to Pochs recent 6742 different formations is that this line up has square pegs in square holes. Players perform better when they are asked to do what they are good at and not something they cant.
As you said, simple. And glaringly fkin obvious frankly yet some coaches seem to over analyse everything until their head is so far up their arse they cant see daylight.

Might seem insignificant but will be interesting to see who played RCB. We know 2 years ago Mourinho targeted Sanchez. Will he stick him on the left or help him more by playing him on his stronger side?

I think Pellegrini is expected to try and play exciting attacking football (as that is the West ham way according to the people over there).

In other words, he cannot admit to mistakes and correct them. Terrible.

To be fair he did often change formations and tactics but I agree he was extremely slow to make substitutions

The only surprise is no Sissoko in the starting XI but we don’t know the reasoning for that. Plus we know Mourinho likes Dier and our form dropped off a cliff when two things happened: Dembele left and Dier got a serious illness and struggled to regain complete fitness since. That was our central midfield for years.

I’ve never like Sissoko in CM so I’m happy. He has his strengths but I don’t think he instinctively knows where to position himself and isn’t a natural organiser of the team. Not saying he’s bad though. Ndombele also isn’t great defensively.
