gee that game highlighted just how much we need new fullbacks, and Sissy is not a DM, my god he was horrible

Jan has the turning arc of the Queen Mary and about as much pace although he can defend well centrally, and Aurrier, well, not the level of where we want to be

since Poch started with us we'll always been defensively strong and we're just not used to seeing our defense getting beaten up so easily

Our full backs are our biggest weakness.
Not at all. This obsession on SC with FBs is absurd. There's been nothing but complaining about FBs on here since the time of Assou-Ekotto and beyond, and when we go through pairs and pairs of FBs and the SC choir stays the same, it tells me the issue isn't the players on the pitch. The SC complaining about our FBs is like a farmer who wants to sell eggs but when he is dissatisfied he complains about the quality of his rooster. Then when he is dissatisfied with the milk he still complains about the quality of his rooster.

Here is a crazy thought (ready to get lots of wtf ratings)...until January when we might sign a proper DM if pigs fly... how about giving Foyth a go as DM, defensively could cover the gaps, good on the ball, can pass forwards, relatively quick (just keep him away from the penalty area)..can't do any worse than Dier or Winks
I think Jose just wanted to see for himself if he can count on certain players. Perhaps these players have responded really well in training so he's decided to give them a shot to see if it was down to system or personnel.

I think its quite clearly down to personnel. Some players have lost that extra 1% fight, others just can't be counted on.

Sissoko - forget last season now, we won't be anything in midfield until we replace him. He can't inspire and he can't control games, he can't even protect us defensively.

Winks - I like Winks but he seems to suit the European games (forget the Bayern one as he's no DM) where it's more tactical and there's more space. When the game is 10pmph he struggles to move around the pitch and break lines.

If Jose can get a real quality DM who can screen and move the ball well then perhaps we can pair with Ndombele/Lo Celso to start to take control of midfield again.

We'll never get another Dembele but perhaps we can get another Wanyama and start bullying teams again.

Was it you?
Noooo

It was from Poch.

These players have spent so long waiting for change on the pitch that they are used to the coach taking the mantle to change things or organising them.

That's gunna take a while to get outta their system.

Wow we win 3 on the bounce and after what was admittedly a poor performance people are already questioning Jose and whether he's going to become the ManU grumpy fuck. I know things have been shite for a while but some people need to get a fucking grip. He's a very good manager but he isn't turning us into Liverpool in 2 weeks ffs.

It's not about "questioning Jose".

It's his job. Tonight, he performed it poorly for reasons evident to anyone with a cursory knowledge of tactics and football.

He will get criticised when his job performance deserves criticism.

I remember starting a thread praising our full-backs when we had Walker, Trippier, Rose, and Davies. They were integral to how we played. Walker leaving had a pretty big impact on our tactics, and Pochettino never really recovered from that.

The biggest positive is hearing the manager explain that he's seen everything we saw, and some more we didn't.

100 times better than hearing Poch say "we play well and I am very proud" like it was just bad luck.

Also good to see that he wasn't blaming Sissoko, and made a good point that as a team we let Rashford create that situation.

That's fair. That's absolutely fine. We sold Walker, and it wasn't handled well. But I remember that time too, and there still was complaining. Walker was never in the right place, Rose couldn't defend (partly true BTW but OK), and Davies and Trippier were jokes. Which was all absolutely crap. And I too did my fair share of complaining about Davies his first season but I was wrong about him back then, he is actually rather good and has been for at least three seasons. Point being, the FBs who theoretically would satisfy SC AND sign for Tottenham don't exist. The same category of CMs/DMs on the other hand actually does exist.

Poor performance against one of the worst Man United teams, if not the worst, in the PL era.

They did not win it tactically. They won it with hard work from a workmanlike midfield. It will be interesting to see how Jose sets up his team on Saturday because he cannot be happy with what he saw tonight. We were outworked and outfought.

Credit to OGS for how he sent out his players and they worked for him. So much for the Poch debate now.

I thought we would win it off the bench where we had more depth. Wasn't to be.

Mourinho now knows he has work to do. He is a preseason manager and having seen him work we are nowhere near where he will want the team to be.

I was told he wanted the Spurs job because we have the squad to win a trophy now and the players to play similar to his Porto and first Chelsea team. I can see us being like Chelsea with their 4-1-4-1 but he needs to sort out that DM role or we may just be the first club where he wins nothing.

I don't really blame Jose aside from the fact I didn't really see a gameplan, everything looked pretty dull and uninventive. Gotta start to seriously look at some of the playersHalf or two thirds of the first 11 have to be sold/benched. Sissoko is not good enough to play for the club - at the level we require. Same for winks. At the very least they must not play together. Ndombele has to start every game and Lo Celso needs way more minutes, should've even started. Whole backline need to be sold, barring Alderweireld, still have faith in him. Vertonghen kinda losing it, definitely not a LB.
Things need fixing in January.

simply not true. for about two years Walker and Rose were the best FB combination in the prem and that was widely acknowledged here.

If it were going to go wrong tonight, that's exactly how I would have wanted it to happen. No bad luck excuses or playing well blah blah blah.

Pure dreadful and did a brilliant job of exposing the players/positions that have been weak for Poch and are still weak now. Shame Jose fell for the traps, but I don't think he will repeat them.

I dont think this season is over. I think we will come on in the second half of the season and get better as the season closes.

He never replaced Walker, it wasn't a matter of him recovering from anything. Even this Summer he never replaced Tripper.

Jose will sort that out next Summer.

anyway, regarding fullbacks, Aurier just watched Rashford run by him and causally jogged back while Rashford scored their first. Gazza should've saved it but its infuriating to watch that lack of effort.
