Player Watch: Serge Aurier

If we agreed to pay £23m ish for him when he was basically banned from entering the country, with a pending (or current, not sure) criminal record and unwanted by PSG, why would he be worth half that when he's a regular player who has (despite opinion on here) proven PL experience and is actually better than Trippier was in his final season?

If we're only selling because he'd like to leave, and Mourinho would be happy to keep him, why sell him cheap?

Doubt we'll see any real movement on a RB in until his departure becomes more imminent.

I agree generally, perhaps with the exception of someone like Aarons, who seems to tick a lot of boxes, including the homegrown element. Serge getting nearer the exit is probably still the trigger for things though.

I think this will get done around 18 million or so.

We might have to accept a bit less, than the suggested 22 million, in order to get funds in for the RB Mourinho wants.

Having that RB issue addressed and getting that calm/solid defence in place is more important than haggling over the exact market valuation, however I think this will rumble on for a while yet.

Obviously we want the best possible deal but the bigger picture is the priority imo.

How long are we going to have to wait for a new rightback to settle and be part of a calm/solid defence though, that’s my worry.
How many mistakes before we hound the next one out the door and start the process again?

I thought aurier was starting to look a fair bit better. In my opinion, if we do hold onto him, he’s going to have his best season this coming term.

Btw, I have said previously that I don't think Aurier will be going anywhere this summer, because I don't think the price point will be agreed.

I stick by that, but I hope I'm wrong. And I also hope I'm wrong with my 13m valuation and Levy squeezes 17m+ out of Milan!!

Yeah I’m starting to get a bad feeling he won’t be going anywhere. Aren’t the Milan links only because Maldini said they looked at him last summer and made contact with him and the journos have run that it will now happen. I’m not getting excited until he’s holding their shirt aloft.

Concerned that we’ll hold out for too much for the likes of Aurier and Lamela, that it will keep them on the wage bill (and depreciate) and stop arrivals

But a “fair bit better” still had him making stupid mistakes In dangerous positions which we cannot afford.

I wonder if the Eriksen & Vertonghen experience - saying goodbye to two (once) key players for next to nowt - will render Levy more realistic on this front.

If it’s true that we’re not that far away in terms of negotiations with Milan for a price that works for both parties, I can see this happening.
A realistic, meet in the middle figure of 17 mil would be satisfactory. Unlikely to be able to hold out for much more because there’s only Milan in the market right now. I’m sure there’s will be a link for another rb that Milan want, just to make us twitchy.
It’s funny that this might be an example of levy being levyed.
Shouldn't stop us completing on Aarons either

We do have previous for that. But if levy does it to Mourinho it’s going to end in tears.

Fine balance between what is ‘good business’ and what is good for improving the squad in the short and medium term.

Whats the take on selling Aurier but giving chance of RB to Tanganga/Foyth combination...and monitor them till Jan and see, if there is a superior RB available in market ?

We could invest that Aurier money to get a better no9 or CAM....

I dont think he'll be going anywhere because Mourinho loves him. Of course if we get a mega money offer to make Levy's eyes light up, he'll be gone before anyones said Aurrier voir

I'd like to find a way to keep Foyth and this is the most obvious one. He got binned by Mourinho after making one mistake v Norwich (when he was fouled anyway) but otherwise had a good game. His other 'mistakes' have largely come about through over enthusiasm and inexperience, but he's a quality footballer who needs a platform to learn and progress.

But then we are left with 2 young inexperienced players playing at RB.

If we sell Aurier, we need to bring in someone to replace with Foyth/Tanganga as an option as back up.

It's the old catch 22 situation though, the only way to give inexperienced players the experience is to play them. If you think they're good enough, you just have to bite the bullet and go with them. I'm not sold on Foyth, but if Jose reckons either him or Tanganga and Aarons is what we need, then Trophyman just needs to do it.

they will never be good enough if they stay as backup for years. loan them out for first team football and gain the essential experience if they are not good enough to be a starter for us atm
