Surely given his age the buyback wouldn't be his only chance so he might want to stay. Maybe there's a chance he might feel that he isn't ready to go back in 2 years but might when he is 27 or so?

Hopefully Sergio sees first hand the absolute shithousery that goes on throughout that club and the way they treated Bale and the fact their fans are infamously impatient mangos.

But yeah I agree that he’ll be eager to get back after a successful 2 or 3 years here.

Sergio buy back clause
RM cannot just demand we sell him back at profit in the next 3 windows as a guide. Not that simple! The player has to want to go back! And I cannot see that happening, as he is loving life in London, and with us, and wants to stay a very long time

he wont want to go back after he collects his premier league winners medal

I’ve always wondered how much footballers can actually enjoy a city. It’s not like us lot, hitting alL the bars and nightclubs from 17-30+yrs old, staying out for weekends at a time kind of enjoyment. Yes, they have the money, but they train all week and play high pressure football matches up and down our country, and with us, all over Europe.
It’s why I gave up my boots to be in a band. You can really enjoy a city then. ?

It's just not something worth worrying about IMO, not when it's out of our control. I'm just gonna enjoy him whilst we have him and then see what happens when the time comes. If we do lose him, hopefully he will have just set the bar for what we expect from that position.

He has only just joined. Let's cross that bridge if it comes. Do all we can our end to show him how well liked he is here and as long as he enjoys his football with us there's not much more we can do.

Exactly. The thing is, if we bought another left back from any other team, and they were tearing up the league, then Madrid came calling... It would be hard for any player to turn them down, and we'd probably lose them anyway. This way, the fee is just set already.

We just have to hope he helps us win something while he's here, and that maybe he doesn't wanna leave if/when they do try to buy him back.

I always figured the buy back was there in case a club wanted to sell him on, to Barcelona for example, Barca do the same thing in reverse.

Isn't the buy back clause for around £45m? How much profit are they going to make on a left back if it costs that much to re-sign him? And why would he agree to leave us just to be moved on to a different club for his previous club's financial benefit?

How would it be for his previous club's financial benefit?
The point is that it stops a player moving to Barcelona via an intermediary, a bit paranoid maybe but they have a paranoid rivalry.

I think the buyback figure was £35M. So we'd make £7-8M profit and have him for two years worst case scenario.

They can definitely enjoy it!

The best restaurants, the most exclusive clubs have VIP areas for exactly this sort of clientele (for the record, I think they're utterly terrible, but if you like that kind of thing...).

I know what you mean, but I'd say London is way better for that kind of thing, for that type of person.

Ultimately they're never going to be able to smash coke in a toilet like your ordinary party goer (for the record, I'm not talking about me - I'm old and crap now) but for sure they can have a good time

2 or 3 years is a long time in football. Even an ITK can't call whether a player will settle in well or not. He might be here 6 months through winter and lockdowns and pine to get back to Spain at whatever cost. Hopefully he loves it here and wants to stay but there are far too many variables to call it.

Sorry, I misread what you originally said. I read it as Madrid buying him back to then sell him elsewhere and make a profit, like previous clubs have done with similar clauses.

That would be great if so but Marcelo isn't getting any younger and this guy is Spanish so playing for Real Madrid is like the ultimate dream to a Spanish person so I think that as much as he might enjoy it at Tottenham and if we do well he might be tempted to stay for a 2nd year there is a very real possibility that from next summer onwards we might lose him.

I see this as a 1 year loan to be honest lets enjoy him whilst we have him and not worry about this part of things as its out of our control, if he stays then great, if not then we make a profit and use that money to buy a LB of at least his quality.
