It also gives a lot more protection to whoever the substandard RWB is. We know RWB is a huge problem for us and having DS as the RCB that is covering just makes things even worse.Dier’s return would allow Romero to go to the right which immediately improves our ability to play out from defence. Watching Davinson advancing the ball in the second half was was an exercise in hope and futility over reality.
RWB is a real issue with both Royal and Doherty looking poor both offensively and defensively. Neither inspires any confidence going into the game against city, I wouldn’t be against playing Tanganga there against city. He had his best game against city and would arguably shore up that flank better than Royal and Doherty and given their lack of impact offensively we don’t lose much.It also gives a lot more protection to whoever the substandard RWB is. I've been surprised that Romero came back and went Central as Sanchez looked alright centrally in January, I felt Tanganga was letting him down on the right side and assumed that Romero would slot right in.It also gives a lot more protection to whoever the substandard RWB is. I was so critical of Dier especially last season but it gets more an more apparent with every game just how much he directs and leads that back line. I still don't think he's mobile enough for a 2 CB partnership, but as the middle CB in a three he is so important to us. Having less responsibility as far as coving ground is concerned, allows him to concentrate on just dealing with what's in front of him and bossing the two either side of him.
If you'd have told me this time last year I'd be posting about desperately needing him back in the side I'd have laughed, but in Conte's system he literally essential right now, and what he brings to the party is sorely missed.
Yeah I think he's better centrally as far as defending is concerned. Again that centre role is more about just dealing with what's in front of you from a purely defending POV. His distribution isn't anywhere near good enough to play there in anything other than out of desperation, but I agree he looks better there than he does wide in the three.I've been surprised that Romero came back and went Central as Sanchez looked alright centrally in January, I felt Tanganga was letting him down on the right side and assumed that Romero would slot right in.
It works imo because Romero and Davies rush out and Dier sits and covers which ever one goes. He's not mobile enough to be the pressing CB and Romero isn't disciplined enough to be the one that sits. It's also better as Romero helps out whoever the RWB is. I have no doubt we'll look a lot more stable once he's back.It is so obvious isn't it. We miss the measured passing and also calmness that he brings in that back three. Sanchez look a quarter of the player without him there too.
Romero is just far too rash and ill disciplined both in challenges and positionally to play that central position.
Yeah but again Dier coming in doesn't just strengthen the one CB position. It strengthens 2 positions because the RCB also gets upgraded because Romero goes back to his more natural position. We probably will be more stable, but Dier's capable of terrible mistakes himself though.
He's obviously better than Sanchez, but he's hardly an elite CB that we are waiting to return. It really shows how far we've fallen.

I'd give him player of the season purely based on what happens when he isn't on the pitch!
