Will be interesting to see how much time he gets to work with the players on tactics given the fixture schedule this year.

It's tough enough coming into a new club mid season anyway but to do it when you're playing twice a week every week due to the mid-season WC & Europe it's going to be a whole new world for him and it'll be interesting to see if/how their style changes over the next month or two.

Annoyingly, as it seems the Premier League will have games postponed this weekend and next weekend it gives Potter a little more time to get things set up with his players.

If next weekend is off, that's going to be a big chunk of time for Potter to get set up...

Good that we have faced them at the Bridge. But regardless, I still think it's a tall ask to think Potter can immediate bring them back to Tuchel's level at their finest.

Tuchel is a master of his own demise. He continually says he wants to coach and not be involved in the transfer business, but fell out with the club hierarchy at Dortmund and PSG at least partly because of his public complaints about their transfer business. If there is a problem, you can choose to be part of the problem or part of the solution and he usually chooses to be part of the problem.

Regarding Boehly as an owner, has done well with the Dodgers. Yes, they are big spenders but they have also complete rebuilt their farm system which is now loaded with talent. They have been consistently the best regular season team in the NL for the past few years, though they only have one title to show for it. Remember that baseball, much like the Champions League, is a knock out tournament and anything can happen in a playoff series.

Unfortunately, I think he will play the long game by hiring a DOF and allowing them to do the job. I actually think Potter is a good appointment but will struggle initially because the roster is a mess when trying to figure out the best system to play to bring out the best in them.

Regarding the comments about footballers having bigger egos than in a American sports, it is only partially true. By far the league with the biggest egos in the US and in which the players hold way more power than the coaches or even the GMs is the NBA. MLB has its share but not like either football or the NBA.

Didn’t Chelsea win a ridiculous amount of games when Tuchel first took over? Hopefully the fans and board unfairly hold Potter to the same standard initially.

The big moment will be if they don’t get top 4 this season. If they keep him I think it will work out well for them as I reckon the following season he’ll get them back up there (but even that’s quite a big ask) but there is a good chance they do sack him if they finish outside the top 4. Will be interesting to see how it plays out because I don’t think he’ll go on a run like Tuchel did when he first took over

Yes during the first six months under Tuchel they were ridiculously good. In fact there's a huge falloff around the 50 game mark, you can split Tuchel's tenure into exactly two 50 game spells and the last 50 are significantly worse than the first 50 in almost every metric.

Their target is that top four is seen as the bare minimum due to CL revenue, Boehly may have appeared to be a bit of a maverick so far but he knows the value of the CL and won't accept anything beneath that. If Potter can't keep them top four there is a very good chance he will be let go almost no matter what sort of football they play.

Part of his thinking might be, “I sacked Tuchel this early to give you a good enough chance to get top 4 this season” kind of thing.

if he waited until just before the WC and things got worse you can’t realistically expect a new manager to turn it around with half the season gone and in 8th place or whatever. But only half dozen games in and a qtr of a billion spent (even without sign off from new manager) will hopefully make him sack him if Potter doesn’t get top 4.

I don't get this...how many previous Chelsea manager have ''ruined their reputations' by working there?
There's always a mug club to take a punt on even their biggest flops like AVB. Sigh. And Potter isn't an AVB regen IMO. He'll be a solid, if not very successful Prem manager for yonks.

Yeah there's a really good article on the Athletic that breaks down his tenure. Apparently at the beginning he was really personable and won over all players but by the end there were out of favour players who say they hadn't had a one-to-one conversation with him in a year. Seems to be a common thread with Tuchel - after a certain point he simply can't maintain relationships with players and/or the board so everything falls apart.

I actually think they were probably right to sack him as I don't think things were going to get any better, but the timing of the takeover made things awkward. Boehly clearly wanted to give Tuchel a chance but it took the length of the summer and the start of the season to truly realise he definitely wasn't their guy and better to cut their losses. Maybe he should've stuck with Tuchel a bit longer, but if they were dead set on sacking him, why not just get it done with ASAP , especially as Chelsea were playing shit anyway.

Thing is, not only has the bad timing fucked them in the transfer market somewhat, but it also makes things extra hard for Potter joining in the midst of a crazy schedule. The postponement buys him a little time but also denies him a winnable fixture vs Fulham. Now the first league game could be Liverpool with the eyes of the world on him.

Overall I'm fascinated to see how this turns out. I think it would be a tricky job for many managers given the expectations so it will be both a huge test and a glorious opportunity for Potter if he can make it work.

Hope he crashes and burns though.

You know football is fucked when Chelsea spend £20m on buying a new manager.....
I get what your saying but for the role that managers and especially potter will have he could change the club very much for the better, so spending £20m on someone like that makes more sense to me than spending £25m on a squad player.

True. I do wonder who the right manager is for Chelsea though. The managers are never given sufficient power by the board to manage the players and drop them when necessary.

Potter has built his reputation on his coaching. If he can get them playing how Brighton do, then they'll prosper, possibly only short-term though.

But once a few star players become unhappy with something, let's see how Potter manages both the player and the board.

Do we have a better squad? Absolutely.

Do they lack quality players? That was obviously said tongue in cheek, but they are not significantly more talented than Brighton - right now.

I don’t rate Sterling - too selfish, and not enough quality around him to take advantage of that. City let him go to a “competitor” for a reason. Mount is struggling, ditto Havertz. Ziyech and Pulisic are squad players who lack confidence.

I would probably take Silva over Dier, but that’s close. Chilwell lost his spot to Cucurella, and I’d take Perisic over him.

James is probably the only position where Chelsea have a clear advantage.
I mean their cms when fit are way better than ours. Jorginho kovacic and Kante walk into our side.

To each his own, I suppose. I don't think any of them "walk" into our side ahead of Hojbjerg and Bentancur.

Kante - old and injured.

Kovacic - decent, would be good competition for Bentancur - but is not obviously better, and is not industrious enough to replace Hojbjerg.

Jorginho - also 30+, and also one to compete with Bentancur, but again, is not industrious enough to play the position that Conte wants.
