Lovely people of SC.

For the past few years my friends and I have been playing 5 aside, but recently upgraded to 11 aside with the season opener kicking off in regents park next Sunday.

Now we are terrible, 5 aside used to hide how bad we were as the pitch was so small, 11 aside will expose that half the team are overweight, the other half don't like heading the ball, and the remainder of us are allergic to the ball (and by that sentence I can't do maths).

We usually need a player or two - if you're interested in becoming a full time or part time ringer let me know. We have the 'cup game' this weekend...I'll let you know how badly that goes.

1030 or 2pm in regents park every Sunday.

it's great that you are giving 11 a side a go. I play for a vets team (over 35s). We are no doubt far less fit than you guys, some of the players pullout of headers and tackles too, yet we do pretty well.

What I have found is that as you get older you just play the ball to feet, let it do most of the work. We very rarely play a pass that ee hope someone will run on to. I can honestly say I am better at football now than I ever have been, yet I do NOTHING that well at all any more.

our season doesn't start until October, but if you have a week without a fixture I mane able to speak to the boss and arrange a friendly with you. We don't play every week, so there will be plenty of free weeks.

I'm 38 and did the same going from 5 (over 35s) to 11 a side in the Cambridge league with a new team only just set up. I am the second eldest player or as I call it "experienced" lol.

First league game this Saturday after four weeks of friendlies against higher league teams (W 0 D1 L3 F:2 A:17) so should be interesting. What wasn't interesting was marking 17 year old speed merchants when one of your centre halves keeps dropping ten yards behind everyone else.

I play 7a side, upgraded similar to most from 5's, going to 11 is a brave move but one i applaud. Our biggest issue is always getting numbers. The 5 a side i used to play was on Sundays but too often people bailed out, we are having a little more luck on Wednesday nights with 7s but even so, we have probably 17 names on our list and very often its not until the last minute we get our 7th man confirmed for the match. Would love to try 11 a side but don't know if my body could handle it.

Exactly,

Our 5-aside was in a cage and pretty brutal in terms of twists, turns and fitness. We were always turning people away as our "core team" was filled. we worked out we averaged 14 requests for the 7 slots (2 subs) each week so upgraded. Now we have, eight people a week. As the old addage goes, people are great, peoples are useless.(love people hate public).

So your 11 a side, does it have professional rules? ie max three subs and 45 mins half or do you at least get rolling subs? I hope your first match goes well. If i can get fit enough i may well join you if you still need players in a few weeks, i have been wanting to get back to playing twice a week for a while and was contemplating trying to get 10-14 people to meet up regularly over weekends on a rented pitch but then i decided that was going to be much of a hassle to organise.

If I was closer, I'd be up for that. I've got my own 6 a side which I'm keeper for as well, but looking to get into the 11 a side teams as well.

Can I ask how you went about getting a team set up for it? Thanks.

I organise a friendly kickaround in Regents Park on Sundays.

A few of us can play a bit and a few are genuinely pretty bad. All of us either hate the cheating, nasty parts of the game or simply don't want to commit to playing every week in a league.

Every now and again we enter small tournaments and have the very occasional 11 aside game against groups we randomly find.

If you ever fancy a friendly match we could probably get something sorted.

I'm almost 38 and just stopped playing 11 a side myself. Feel a bit sad, but the team I played for were one of the best sunday sides around, winning pretty much every cup and league for years.

End of season do to Benidorm done it for me, I paid up, got to about two weeks before going, realised that at 37 I'm old enough to be many of the lads dads, and felt old/sad so called it a day, and didn't go to Benners with the boys.

Will miss playing, considering signing for a vets team and playing a little bit here and there. Weirdly, like RMY, I reckon I'm a better keeper now, than I have ever been in my youth, probably not agily wise, but positioning and confidence without a doubt.

I'm not great, but I am fast so if you need a fast player I'd be up for it on occasion. Don't think I'd be able to commit every weekend but I'd try. Where do you meet?

I haven't played 11 a side for about 12 years but have been looking to get back in to playing for a while but shift work got in the way. Doing a regular 9-5 mon-fri now although I don't know how much of a ringer i'd be

The league setting game ended with a 6-0 loss.

It really showed we are a 5-aside team. Nobody liked heading the ball and the midfield (i.e. me) was missing as everything was longballed over the top.

Happy to be in the lower division and we can only get better. But all good.

I'm 36. Been getting back into 5 a side, and that's fine. But I've started going down to watch my local team on Saturday's, and I'm getting that old itch to play properly again. The biggest problem these days is committing the time to it, but I'm seriously considering finding an over-35's team, or maybe doing some coaching badges.
