2012/13 - The race for CL

Well, the season is, somewhat underwhelmingly to date, underway - and I think we all know what it's mainly about in terms of the final standings: The race for the Champions League. Early days still, obviously, but as the season get underway at least we can share some views on the other teams around us, as well as our own chances of getting to the holy grail of European club football.

Let the race begin, and the best team win

So, let me get things started. I watched 45 minutes of both Arsenal and Liverpool yesterday, as well as the 90 minutes of Newcastle of course. Here's what I saw:

Liverpool: New manager, new style, same old story, only worse. I watched the first 45 minutes only, and I understand they really struggled in the last 45, and was not impressed. Very much like Liverpool last year: decent passing in the middle of the park, a few chances created, but clear lack of cutting edge. Seemed dependent, once again, on Suarez both creating the goods and getting the goals.

Arsenal: Now, this was interesting. Mind you, Sunderland didn't even try to score, and I'm not even sure they had posession of the ball in Arsenal's half for more then 2 passes the entire last 45. But, still, Arsenal created very little and certainly seemed to miss RVP. During the 45 minutes I watched it took them about 35 minutes to create a proper chance. Cazorla looked a very good player and that Ivory Coast forward looked much sharper than last year, but if Giroud or Podolski can't bring the goods I think they'll be in some trouble.

Newcastle: some great attacking players combined with work horses and a strong defensive unit. More of the same this year, but they were lucky to beat us.

Spurs: thought we deserved at least a point, and with 1-2 strikers and maybe a midfieler coming in I'm confident we can get 4th again.

I'll watch Chelsea later and will update after that.

The only reason I'm watching these teams is because they're our rivals for CL, so this Spurs chat to me, mate..
