Just saw this article about Luka saying that he doesn't like his wages being publicised as Croatians are really having a hard time in the recession.

Can you imagine an English player saying that?

Luka aways comes across as being a really humble guy, like many overseas players, and it is refreshing to see that at least some players appreciate their lives as footballers and all that comes with it.

Luka Modric is embarrassed by how much he is earning during a recession.

The Tottenham star signed a new contract in May worth £70,000 a week, but said: 'I am quite annoyed with all the headlines about my wages. Croatia is in recession, the economic situation is hard and I don't like it when numbers are being thrown around.'

Then give some money away to the poor!!!

Many top players do!

This is more about showing some degree, however small and superficial, of empathy with the plight of the average man on the street. It just strikes me that many top European players seem to maintain some connection with their background and upbringing.

I know that loads of English players do, but not the top players really.

Doesn't he do some charity work with his mum or is that somebody else?

Could be thinking about Berbatov and the nurses. Modric being embarrassed that he makes so much money? Well he can always play for free.

It's like George Michael with the Sony case. He called himself a slave, but when the judge asked for his bank details, he said that he didn't want it made public as it was a bit embarrassing. So the judge asked him to write it on a piece of paper. "You think your a slave and yet your worth £75m Mr Micheal" the judge said in front of the whole court.

Cracked me up.

If he didn't want everyone to know what wages he was on he shouldn't have said anything. Today nearly every paper has the story and has printed that he's on about £70k a week.

Most people who are not total tits don't like having their wages banded about. Given the title of the thread I was hoping for something more.

That's probably a little unfair. It was more the reasons he gave for it as opposed to just not wanting his wages being public knowledge.

But yes, the title is a little overstated...

Yes, I was not really having a pop at the original poster, just trying to bring a sense of perspective.

It is good when footballers do give something back, but most do not doing anything like as much as they should.

I don't think this makes him amazing.

Nor do I! I just think it demonstrates that he still lives in the real world.

I should have entitled the thread "English players are total tossers" or something..............

Do you believe most English players like their wages publicised? I don't.
