Bassong is terrible.

Yes Vertonghen can play left back but ideally he should be kept at centre back along side Kaboul.

We need a consistent back 4 this season and injuries permitting it should be:

Walker Kaboul Vertonghen Ekotto - week in week out in the premiership.
Agreed on Bassong, he is an option though.

Can you see Cissokho signing to be a bench warmer? I can't. The fact he plays for France and not one of the African Nations sides is good come January time.

With the modern game involving squad rotation and the ridiculous amount of games we'll potentially be playing next season, I don't see him being too unhappy with spending a bit of time on the bench.

Plus, if AVB can get him performing at a consistently good level again, he'll be excellent competition for Ekotto (something he doesn't have at the moment).

A couple of questions that need to be asked:

- is AVB possibly signing him to be 1st choice with Ekotto being the back up?
- Is it beyond the realms of possibility that Ekotto could be set for a big money transfer elsewhere? (PSG previously being linked with him).

While I agree that competition for first team spots is a good thing I am struggling to understand why we would splash the cash on a player that would be a sidegrade to BAE.

Disco-Benny was one of the best left backs in the Premier League last season, and while we need competition and backup I am not sure an expensive signing (as far as both wages and transfer fee is concerned) is the way to go. You may say Cissokho is a better player than BAE, but let me remind you he is completely unproven in the Premier League.

Sometimes I get the impression that us fans want the club to buy a player just for the sake of buying him. If, god forbid, BAE is going anywhere I'd be all for getting Cissokho in, but with BAE in the team the potential transfer just doesn't make sense.

What about this Fryers kid? Why don't we give him a chance?

Though Cissokho is a class player. Just don't see the need for him.

Will Benny thrive under the more strict philosophy of AVB though? Say what you will about Harry, but he allowed the players to express themselves in their style of play and Benny was one of those who benefited the most from that IMHO.

Everyone and their nan loves Benny, but he can from time to time be a bit dodgy defensively, so maybe some competition/coverage could do him well.

I am getting a bit excited when we are linked to players like this, because Cissokho and a player like Atsu for example are both under the category "Exciting players". I hope you also see it like this.

But, but.. Assou-Ekotto is a French-born African! I thought that would be enough for you not to want to replace him.

I guess the Cameroonian heritage isn't exiting enough? Senegal is where it's at!

Aly Cissokho value is much more than 7 mil.
Lyon bought him for 15 mil few years ago, he is good, young (24y) so I assume he will cost much higher

I was really surprised when I saw the transfer fee, because this is a player I rate as one of the very best left back's around.

They have a very nice team.

Cissokho-Pereira are great fullbacks. Soldado a class striker. Jonas/Feghouli seemed very dangerous, both scored against us. Diego Alves is a hell of a keeper as well.

Tottenham have opened negotiations for Lyon left-back Aly Cissokho, according to reports in France.
The highly-rated defender, valued at £7m, has also interested Aston Villa and Newcastle.
But the French newspaper Le Parisien says talks with Spurs are at an advanced stage and the 24-year-old could sign for the London club this week.

Would be great. One of the left back's I rate as the very best.

Would you prefer him or Taiwo though...? :sneaky:
