That's what I thought and that's what it looks like on the replays I've seen online. But the camera angles don't cover the whole pitch, so I can't see if there's a fullback off somewhere playing Adebayor onside. If not, by the time Bale controlled the ball, they were both past the last defender and Adebayor would have been offside the moment he touched a pass from Bale.

I just watched MOTD, Adebayor is behind him so not offside

Either way, tho, Ade may not have known this

Adebayor was slightly behind Bale, but they were both in an offside position (unless there's another opponent out of shot) and moving rapidly toward the goal. I can't see how Bale could have delivered a ball that didn't go forward and that Adebayor could have struck. Any pass going level or backward would have run behind Adebayor as he advanced on goal. Any pass going forward would have triggered an offiside flag.

If Adebayor was behind Bale then he wouldnt have been offside, irrespective of whether the ball went forward or not. Rules have changed on offsides.

Player isnt offside for the following:
1 - A throw on
2 - If ball is played sideways or backwards
3 - If player receiving the ball is behind the player who passes the ball or the ball itself
4 - If 2 or more defensive players are between the ball and the goal

You can pass the ball forward legally as long as the player you're passing to is behind you can't you? Or have I fundamentally misunderstood the offside rule?

Anyway, that wasn't the point. The point was Ade looked miffed. I'm glad Bale took it on as he scored, I was just speculating on Adebayor's reaction. Even if he was offside, strikers don't always realise at the time, hence they get an arse on

Ade was well placed for a tap in for at least two of the goals........on any other day the ball might have been pulled back to him. It is a function of forward line partnerships....great if both forwards are scoring ...a bit awkward if one is not. I feel that Ade is best staying with Tottenham....probably the alternative for him would be some crazy cashed up Russian club with very friendly supporters:eek:

No he wouldn't as he was level with Bale. Unless the laws have changed, you can't be offside when the ball is played square. I also believe that you have to be in advance of the player passing the ball.

Just seen the other responses, sorry to belabour the point.

I actually thought that Ade had a good game. He took up some excellent positions and was unfortunate not to get on the score sheet himself. I think we'll see a huge change in his demeanour once he gets a goal or two, strikers are notoriously miserable sods when they're not scoring, particularly if they have an ego.
