Our set pieces today were incredible. Two goals, another wrongly disallowed, and a fourth denied by superb goalkeeping to push it onto the woodwork.

I have seen that along with us a lot of the teams seem to have got set piece coaches in this summer. I’ve heard Arsenal, us, Leicester and Liverpool referenced as having them. The first thing I think is, why the fuck didn’t we (and other teams) have them before? Seems such an oversight not to have that expert on the coaching team. What were we doing before? Just getting it in the mixer and hoping for the best!?!?

As Danny Murphy puts it.....

Murphy questioned the need for specialist coaches – including set-piece and throw-in coaches – as he believes the manager and his first-team coaches should be able to fulfil the role themselves.

While Murphy insisted he was “all for attention to detail” and “trying to get marginal gains from anything,” he argued that “every club I’ve been at, one of the coaches does the set-pieces.”

Some managers think, like Murphy, that they know how best to coach every situation. Seems blatantly obvious if you can bring in someone that knows more about a certain aspect of the game and it will gain you points then you should do just that.

Yeah I guess it depends on how people like to manage. I like to get as many opinions as possible if I have to make a big decision because there will always be one person who tells you something you haven’t thought of. But It’s funny that someone like Conte, who is thought of being a control freak, actually has the self reflection to know he needs to delegate to an expert.

What coaching has Murphy ever done ? All very well being a player but coaching at the highest level is something entirely different. Small percentages of improvements = higher league places, much more money, and opportunities to challenge for the very top.

Well yes, and I expect we are paying our set piece coach less than most fringe players earn in a month. Which one will generate more points in a season?

Yeah given the amount of money in the game it seems like a huge oversight. The potential for marginal gains, especially from set pieces, is absolutely huge and I think every top tier club will have a specialist coach within a few years. I listened to an interesting coaching podcast with a Championship set-piece coach recently and it sounds like a great entry point for aspiring managers and coaches - they get to work closely with players and develop some of the interpersonal and analytical skills required to take the next step up the ladder.

The next question is, where else can we make marginal gains? People made fun of Liverpool for having a specialist throw-in coach but why not? When you're paying top players 200k per week, what's the fuss spending 30-40k a year on someone to work on throw-ins when we take 25 of them a game?

A specialist defensive set piece coach seems like another obvious one (I believe Vio only works on the attacking ones).

2nd most goals per set piece in the league this season.

Last season we scored 8 set pieces in the league (joint 14th "most"), with only Man Utd, Watford and Norwich scoring less.
We already have 5 this season (joint most with Liverpool).

If Kane manages to score a free-kick this season, Vio is getting a knighthood.

Or if he stops Kane taking them he also deserves one
Yeah I can't believe that Kane is still taking them. What does he do in training on free kicks that means he keeps getting chances? Surely Conte has the balls to tell him to give them to Son, Dier, Perisic or anyone else. Honestly. At this point it's getting ridiculous.

At this point, I'm convinced that a "unlimited attempt at free-kicks" clause is included in his contract. It's the only thing that makes sense to me ??

When we’ve played City and Lpool over this last season or so, I couldn’t believe how hard it was to receive the ball from our throw ins. The press was unreal, by far the most intensity compared to any other teams.

We gave up possession within one or two touches, almost every time.

"Meanwhile, Spurs are said to be restructuring their academy recruitment after Chris Perkins, emerging talent manager, quit to join Arsenal in January."

I wasn't aware of this until now. :(

This Jeff Vetere character sounds like an absolute cretin!

After reading about him I’m more surprised and concerned that he was hired in the first place than that he was sacked after 5 months.

That’s the 2nd of the new structure to leave already.

Add that to the Manager targets Paratici was said to be in favour of (Gattuso, Nuno etc)

I’ve gotta say I’m concerned. Fabio seems to be good at identifying players under valued by the market but everything else that is public does not fill me with confidence and that’s without even mentioning the charges in Italy
