It could be entirely possible that Woodgate is completely finished and i always get the feeling that King is walking the line when it comes to how long he will physically be able to play for. Obviously we have Gallas but hes only going to be around for a season or 2.

Do you think we should be looking at trying to get someone in like Cahill or Jagielka? or do you feel our long term future will be ok with Dawson, Kaboom, Bassong and perhaps Walker?

Discuss...........

The future's bright, the future's Steven Caulker!

If not, we'll bring in another centre back when the time comes. Who knows who we could be able to attract by then (After a second consecutive Champions League victory.... ah! the dream!)

None of the young ones look of the same class as King, Woodgate or Gallas at the same age.

We've got the luxury of waiting to see if they push on.

Personally I think we'll probably have to bring new blood in

Id like one of our youth player step up. Walker looks the most promising to me.....but who knows

Who knows Sandro may even be shoved into CB. 3 of our centre backs are amongst our top earners (Gallas/King/Woody) if they do retire/leave then this will free up funds to bring in replacements. Do hope that someone can step up though.

dont forget kaboul is only 23/24, he's shown he can doavery good job at CB (even though he hasnt done it consistently)

With him, bass and daws we have good options for the next 6 or 7 years without bringing any new players in.

Unless Woodgate does come right we definitely need to make a major CB signing next summer.

I like Jagielka and it seems he and Dawson might end up becoming England's medium-to-long term pairing.

I'm not so keen on Cahill - he's pretty much just a poor man's Dawson.

We really should have bought Kjaer this summer.

Chiellini and Subotic are perhaps two we should start looking at/making contact with now ahead of next summer.

I think Kaboul's got all the attributes to be a first class centre-half. He's big, strong, good in the air, but the real bonus is he's fast and when he gets the ball cultured. The only thing he's lacked previously is decision making and perhaps a bit of concentration. The good news is that unlike the physical attributes those can be (and I think there's evidence to suggest are being) learnt. What he's got on his side is that he's clearly a smart cookie.

I also think his time at Portsmouth was invaluable and importantly it was done under the tutelage of the same coaching team as he now has at Spurs.

In short then, I have high hopes for Kaboul and think he's got the potential long-term to surpass Gallas and even King.

Personally I think our centre back futures fine. Dawson (solid reliable) Bassong has the attributes IMO to become top class and i still reckon Kaboul is decent....Caulker also looks good and lets not forget King(world class) and Gallas(world class)

I'm happy with what we've got actually. Woodgate's finished, but Gallas and King probably both have another 2 seasons, Dawson's improving consistently, and in 2 years time I'd back one of Bassong or Kaboul to have progressed into a top quality CB

There's also Caulker, who seems to be the only one of our youngsters to actually perform consistently well when on loan

Probably worth reading my original post...

The point was that King cant surely play for much longer in his condition and Gallas isnt going to play for more than 2 seasons.

So is Dawson, Bassong, Kaboul and Walker good enough?

Dawson will take over the mantle as top dog when the elders go. Dawson in 2 or 3 years from now would do a fantastic job in that role one would think.

Bassong and Kaboul are both talented if raw. 2-3 more seasons for them should see good improvement

Walker and Caulker will hopefully continue to improve and complete the 'youthful' quota

We will possibly need to purchase a top class experienced CB in the interim if need be

I've been wanting Cahill for ages, and I wanted us to sign Jags when Everton got him. Both are part of Englands future, with Jags looking like the most likely to partner Dawson for me.

I do think that Daws and Seb will become our defensive mainstays for a few seasons to come. As good a job as he did towards the end of last season at RB, I just struggle to trust the lad in defence, especially at CB where he simply loses concentration too much and comes flying out of position way to much. I think he just wants to be a midifielder, so I would prefer it if we had better defensive cover. Having said that he is only 23 so plenty of time to learn that composure and discipline.

Kaboul needs a brain implant before he can be considered at CB IMO.

I don't mind him as a midfield destroyer, or a 2nd or 3rd choice RB, but he's an accident waiting to happen at CB.

I hope Redknapp's move to sign a 4th specialist CB in Woodgate's absence in Gallas is an indication that he thinks the same.

I don't think you can criticise a player like Kaboul for his intelligence. That will come with experience.

I think Kaboul and Bassong will learn a lot from Gallas, King and Dawson. Either or both can go on to become 1st choice in the future.

Caulker will come through in a couple of years too. While I think Walker will end up at right back.

And Dawson's intelligent ? and not error prone or subject to rushes of blood to the head ?

To be honest out of Dawson, Bassong and Kaboul I'd say Kaboul has the most redeeming qualities and potential to be very good, He's quick, strong and comfortable on the ball. But we'd have to see him given a a good run of games to be sure. He was treated diabolically by Ramos. But I wouldn't mind if we went out and bought two top quality CB's either

Having seen Caulker play on 2 or 3 occasions,i would be very suprised if he made it in our 1st team.
This is on the basis of us continuing to be a top 4 side, and hopefully CL regulars.
Even if we don't continue to be where we are now, Caulker, judging what i have seen of him, will struggle to get into our 1st team, IMO.
I hope im proved wrong, but i dont believe he is anywhere near good enough.

We'll resign Dorian Dervitte for £12 million from Villareal after he has a blinding season, no doubt...
