No, this isn't a reference to The Warriors.

I know we've a lot of threads about various players so I don't mean to cram up the Spurs Chat with more. Actually fuck it, yes. Yes, i do.

I wanted to give a big shout of to the boys at the back, Toby and Jan. They were fantastic today, and as I was watching the game I was thinking to myself how well they've done to develop a solid partnership in such a short space of time. And then I remembered that they were centre back buddies at Ajax together a few years back.

This could work out to be one of the best transfer moves in a very long time. When we were in for him, I thought Alderweireld would be a good signing but nothing outstanding. However, it's clear that this was a signing made with real though to it. A player who is close to, and has worked extensively, with our broody Belgian at the back. They've grown together and developed together at Ajax, and hopefully they will now mature together at Spurs to form a formidable pair.

Consistent centre backs is the key to success. I'm mostly Italian, so of course a large part of me is of the belief that you build teams from the back. It's been a massive bug bear of mine for years how our central defenders chop and change and we can never find any consistency or stability. What with 4 clean sheets this season, a really promising sign, I bloody hope these two will go on from strength to strength.

Spot on, OP. The chemistry between center backs is something which cannot be accounted for enough. When we invested in Alderweireld, we didn't just invest in a quality center back, we invested in a ready-made partnership at the back. From there, all we needed to do was sort out our attacking options after those loltastic AM3's we saw in August which bagged us all of three points in four games, and we were in business.
