 Villa quoted 28M..... this is extortion.

Every club wants to protect their asset. Benteke has to be careful. Lambert benched Bent who was record 24m signing getting 100k a week. Benteke has 3 more years in his deal. He scored 40% of Villa's goal - now why shouldnt they quote 28m.

Aren't we quoting similiar with Bale ?

Incidentally I think Benteke has more to him than just being a target man it just seems that the reason many are so excited about his potential signing is that we will finally have a big number 9 that we can play into and can hold up the ball. If we are building around Bale, which I can't see a scenario where we wouldn't they I think we'd be looking for a striker who has great movement to help occupy defenders and pull them away from Bale, is astute at finding spaces so that they can get shots off and is alert around the 6 yard box for crosses or goalkeeper fumbles from Bale's swerving shots. A striker that can create for himself would also be excellent when breaking down stubborn defences.

Not sure that it Benteke, despite his skills. I think he'd be a good addition because he is a good player, but I'm not sure he is a perfect fit.

Another way of looking at it is that Benteke is a beast, he has all the physical attributes defenders hate dealing with; he has great upper body strength, he is a good header of the ball and has decent acceleration. If we managed to get him and tell him to run at defenders, he would occupy at least one CB if not both, creating a lot of space for Bale to beat the fullback and drive inside from the right where he was absolutely lethal last season.

IMO I don't think Benteke is worth that kind of money on the back of 1 great season. I would be reasonably happy if he came to Spurs for say about £12-£15m (don't think he will) but I have this nagging feeling he will be a 1 season wonder and then fade away.

Who knows......ITK knows ;)

Whoever Spurs are going to buy as striker will involve a risk. Just look at Shevchenko, Torres and, to a lesser extent, Adebayor. Finding/getting the "right" striker, amongst all the other positions in a team, must be the most difficult task of all. But sooner or later Spurs MUST take that risk - or risk losing out on CL football again (by a tiny margin).
It's hard to say whether Benteke is a 1-season wonder or he'll keep on improving but of those CF that seem not to be bought up by the rich elite (well, now there are rumours that Chelski are keen on Benteke) I think Benteke is the best candiate - depending on the price of course. There aren't that many "affordable" CF candidates around, those I can think of I am less convinced about: Leo Baptistao, Diego Costa, Leandro, Ederzito, Doumbia.
I would like Spurs to get Benteke plus 2-3 of either of these players (as wide forwards): Rodrigo, Rebic, Fischer, Ezekiel, Jese, Mitrovic, Bernard, Felipe Anderson, Adrian Lopez, Bruma.
With Bale and Townsend as right WF, Benteke and Mitrovic as CF and 2 of the others as left forwards I'd be happy. Oh, time to wake up!

That's not really his game though, based on what i've seen. Others run off him, but he doesn't drive that often. For sure he'd certainly occupy defenders but I just don't see us ever playing in a way that would get the best out of him.

At this point though I'd still take him, whether Levy and Baldini agree for £28m is another thing.

I really don't see Benteke as a lump. just because he is a big strong lump doesn't mean he is just a big target man to lump it up to, it's a bit like Bale, just because he is fast and left footed people naturally said he's a winger keep him out wide left, that has been shown to be incorrect and the same will be the case with Benteke, there really is more to his game than that.
He won't be a one season wonder either and he is worth more than £15m both to Villa and to us so we need to be realistic on the fee.
Be interesting to see where he goes, be nice if it was us but I'll wait and see

Benteke is worth 12-15 tops! Absolute tops! 1 season with 17 goals? So what? If we pay 20m for this player then Seth is very wrong with this clubs transfer policy!

He has 3 years left on his contract - he is worth whatever Villa say he is worth.

Thats not to say we should pay it of course - but they are entitled to value the player at whatever they wish.

i'm just not sure he is "all that".

he is 7/10 for me. I think there are a few 7/10's out there you could get for less money.

I would rather pay less for a player, but

that 7/10 in terms of quality is far better than our 3/10 we have at the moment. The extra 7 million is nothing compared to the money we have lost out on, because we have those 3/10 players up front is nothing.

We need a striker, Benteke is young, but more importantly he will be coming to a club that has the coaches in place under AVB to actually develop a player now.

I just don't think he's that good. that's my issue.

i'm not saying he isn't good....but i view him as 'arlight' instead of great. i think we need great upfront because of what we're aiming for.
