I just don't think he's that good. that's my issue.

i'm not saying he isn't good....but i view him as 'arlight' instead of great. i think we need great upfront because of what we're aiming for.

I am not saying either either, but he is a damn sight better than what we have got at the moment and that is the important bit.

Benteke is worth 12-15 tops! Absolute tops! 1 season with 17 goals? So what? If we pay 20m for this player then Seth is very wrong with this clubs transfer policy!

Well no.

It's 1 season at Villa = 23 goals in 39 games in his first season, aged 22, 77 goals in 179 games for the total club career and 6 in 14 at international level. We're not just talking about goals here either. His workrate is first class.

Are there many 22 year olds out there with a better record than that?

A fair point you make.

I'm just not that excited by the prospect that's all. Happy to be wrong of course.

Edit - no idea why i went all joda on the top line

8 Assists in PL and CC by the looks of it also.

Because Yoda is class ;)

To be honest, I would get seriously excited by anyone coming in who is better than what we have got, especially if they are young and up for it.

For me I can only see us getting him in a cash plus player deal. He's gonna cost too much for us to fork out a massive fee on its own. Unless we buck the trend this summer but I really cant see it.

Well we have kinda already bucked that trend.

25m is more than we've ever spent. If we are going to go full balls, surely it's on a player that will take us to the next level.
Forget what value you think Benteke is, how confident are you that he'd come here and score 25 and take us to the next level?

Very confident with the creativity and platform we have. Not only that, I think he is the type of striker required to create space for the likes of Bale and even Paulinho to get forward.

In fact, there's not many strikers out there who I'd be more confident in to do that who wouldn't cost a lot more and are not already playing in the CL.

People need to remember we aren't going to realistically attract the David Villas or Soldados of this world without CL football. I think Benteke is the best we can hope for. And what a fantastic signing it would be.

Yep and we will have to pay a premium unfortunately.

How so? Paulinho? Ok record signing by a couple of hundred thousand £. When I said buck the trend I meant blow our transfer record out of the water by spending almost 30mil, which is what I reckon it will take to do a deal here.

Yes but... but he's only a 72 rating on FIFA! ;)

Couldn't disagree more. Players only show loyalty if a really top club isn't in for them. The moment a Madrid or United get involved 'loyalty' goes out the window.

The reason people get excited about 'sexy foreign names' is because these are the players who tend to have better technical ability, and aren't madly overpriced into the bargain. Look at someone like Michu for instance.

We're looking to break into the top 4. We should be looking at the best young players in world football, not 23 year old goalscorers from the lower leagues here.

Obviously our opinions differ greatly, but it will be interersting for me to see how this young lad's career develops over the coming years. I may be wrong, but I have a feeling that in the coming years we might be screaming all manner of abuse at Daniel Levy and AVB for not noticing Jordan Rhodes earlier when we could have picked him up for the preverbial song.

Time alone will tell.

Agree. Levy will go £20m tops here IMO. And if villa won't accept that, then I suspect we won't get the player...

I'll be honest, I'm not massively excited about Benteke. Did well last season in a frankly dreadful side, and 21 goals is not to be sniffed at. But then there are plenty of examples where this is usually down to him being the only player capable of scoring relatively regularly in that side. For example; Kevin Phillips at Sunderland, James Beattie at Southampton, Darren Bent at Charlton, Bobby Zamora at Brighton... all did superb for a couple of seasons at these clubs but were for the large part flash in the pans in terms of being prolific. Even recently the likes of Papiss Cisse blew everyone away in his first season at Newcastle, but didn't exactly pull up trees last season.

I personally don't think he'd be much of an improvement on Defoe, and at £25m I think he's heavilly premiumed. If we're going to spend that kind of fee I'd rather we went for someone like Gomez, Jovetic or Dzeko.

I wonder if Villa would be interested in £18m plus Lennon?

They get enough to buy a another young striker and get a significant upgrade on the wing.

Just don't see where Aaron fits in for us in 433.
