Good news, he was doing a good job at centre back before his ban. He’s a leader and it’s good that he’s going to be in and around the team.

Well, I think for you to say this is ‘one of the best signings of the summer’ is rather baffling. Hence the WTF from me.

I don’t dislike Dier. I think he brings some important qualities that Jose likes.

I am delighted to see him not playing in midfield anymore. I think he has reasonable potential at CB but still has a lot to prove.

You say this is ‘one of the best signings of the summer’ but would our rivals see it that way if they had signed him from us? I’m not sure if they would.

But I am 100% behind Eric, and hope he progresses at CB. If he can improve his positional awareness and reading of the danger, I think he could be very good there.
That’s the problem with football fans, everyone is far more concerned with what other fans think than anything else. Perception and ‘cred’ is more important than reality.

Yes, I think tying down a very good centre back for his prime years is one of our best potential signings as if not, we’d have to sell him given that he had a year left and probably at a reduced price (see Eriksen) meaning that we’d not just have to try to buy a new first choice centre back, but it would also impact our funds for those positions where we do lack a first choice player. I don’t any banality or controversy in this standpoint.

I didn’t say ‘our best summer signing’ or ‘better than any signing we could make’. I said ONE of our best summer signings, because when the alternative is having to replace him with a more expensive player, or breaking in on an inferior player, which would be the reality in this climate, it’s a banana skin dealt with early and in a way that allows us to focus on what we have been short of this season.

And all this is before we take in that based on recent selections he’s clearly first choice for our manager.

Dier is tailor made in a Mourinho system of being solid and resolute at the back and pleased he's now getting settled into that role instead of midfield which I was vociferously against.

This is a good move for all parties.

This is a win/win, really.

a) He steps up his game and we have a quality CB on our books.

b) He's a solid backup/utility player and good character around the dressing room.

Him penning a new contract also means we can sell him for a decent fee if he doesn't become the first team regular we're hoping for.

I never liked him as a CD under Pochettino, but in my opinion there is no denying that Aurier and Sanchez have stepped up considerably defensively under Mourinho. Davies also looks in general more solid. Dier got all the "attributes" to be an excellent CD so even if I'm not convinced yet he'll be one I don't see the downside here.

Also I got nothing but respect for Dier. Even when he plays !%"!"!¤ you know he tries his best and he cares in a way few players do these days. Obviously that is not enough to play for Spurs, but it is a good foundation.

Jose likes to have 'generals' in his team that will buy into his methods and help build the team mentality.

Lloris, Dier, Hojberg and Kane would hopefully give us some good leadership qualities through the spine of the team, similar to what he had with Cech, Terry, Lampard and Drogba (just not on the same level unfortunately)

He will only get better at CB, especially if he can consistently play alongside Toby. No doubt this is why Jose managed to convince Toby to stay as well.

Both Dier and Sanchez lack the 90-minute concentration when playing together - they're very good, but slip-ups will happen. Alongside Toby that seems to be drastically reduced with both of them. Sanchez will get the nod when Jose feels we need pace I expect.

Feel pairing is too slow and will mean we will continue to defend deep

I don't agree with that. Alderweireld was brilliant in a high line next to Vertonghen for years under Pochettino. Dier isn't quick, but he isn't slow for the types of sprints a CD normally makes.

Yes. More pace is always better, but Terry and Carvalho did just fine I would say.

Brilliant news!

I think Dier has stepped up massively since the restart, currently our best CB for years to come hopefully..

I’m pleased Erik has the new contract and should be first choice CB with Toby

Sanchez is a worry although he does have pace and might improve under José
Foyth is another matter though as I don’t see him as a FB and would even prefer Aurier

The reality is Eric Dier has only played centre back a handful of times in the last 6 years. Already saying he’s a very good CB and one of the best signings of the summer is definitely perception.

don’t want to put words in swarvsta mouth but I doubt he cares what other fans think just pretty sound reasoning and logic to think that other clubs fans would describe this as one of the best signings of the summer.

Aside from the Sheffield United game, where everyone looked bad, I think Sanchez has been rock solid.

I’m not putting words in his mouth, he literally based his argument on what other fans would think.

For me, securing the future of our managers current first choice centre back (based purely on team selections) was exceptionally important, and one of the most important pieces of business we could do this summer aside from strengthening the 2/3 first team spots that clearly need it. My comment was completely innocuous, off the cuff and certainly doesn’t warrant the discussion it’s received, especially not in the glasshouse of SC’s extremist views only culture within which niche and nuance are treasonous.
