DIers had some very shaky moments the last month, not going into midfield to press the opposing forward has been an issue. I understand why, when he goes into those areas he looks bad, when he gets caught in the channels or high up the pitch it's scary. We'd look much better if we had a player who had the physicality to step in and kill the Striker when appropriate. West Ham was an awful night, kinda forgot how to play football and froze under pressure. Conte said how he wants him to go into midfield when having the ball to create another option, he just forgot to do that in that game which is laughable but shows how his head can crack under pressure. Just like it did when we played Brighton at home last year, awful game, felt like we needed to win and he jumps out, we concede a last minute loser. Fortunately, it turns out it wasn't costly but at the time coming away from that game it felt terminal. "If you cannot win do not lose"

He's doing what he did last season, standing still in a limited role. I don't know how much he's organizing, you'll never know unless you can hear it on the pitch, I haven't been able to hear much personally. I see him and Hojbjerg arguing in games a few times, I get the sense they are in conflict with who is the Daddy back there. I would rather listen to Hojbjerg about football because Dier has had many years where he's looked weak and incapable of defending but this is just conjecture.

I don't understand the idea he is a great long range passer, he has time on the ball and can pick out the odd pass but every game he'll try a pass with his left foot and fire it into the opposing teams midfielder. I don't think hes bad, hes not good though. He's can malfunction when under pressure, that left channel pattern from the goal kick scares the shit out of me when he gets pressed. See West Ham game for details.

The positive is that he can do that thing where he flexes into midfield and receives the ball quite nicely when he remembers. Especially like the wrinkle during our throw-in movements, he comes to create the extra option. If he gets to 6 or 7 goals this season we have a chance of winning the league. I can put up with the mediocre defensive effort if he starts to dominate from attacking corners.

The CCB role plays to all of his strengths and plays away from his weaknesses. It allows him the time to read the game which is a big strength of his, it plays to his strength of winning headers from long balls up to strikers, his long range passing ability and it allows him that bit of extra time get up to speed when covering back, as he’s not the quickest off the mark but once he gets going is rapid. It also removes the need for him defend out wide against wingers which is one of his biggest weaknesses. The role is tailor made for him and he’s been excellent there for us under Conte and fully deserves his England call up
Yeah totally agree.

That was basically my whole point - he's great in this specific role. I just get the feeling some people in the press and maybe on here too are acting like he's stepped up a level and become some incredible CB under Conte, when in reality he's found a role that perfectly complements his existing skillset and hides his weaknesses.

Yeah I agree, his elevation in performance is almost entirely down to playing a role that suits his strengths. That’s not taking anything away from him, many players need this kind of luck in finding a manager and specific role that suits them to really reach their potential as a player

I thought he was good under Poch sitting in defensive midfield. His new role is more suited now as we no longer press as high. Previously he would sit between 2 centre backs as we pushed up to the halfway line. His current role feels more like a natural progression from his previous role. To suggest he's only good for this role is a bit harsh, he's just suited to the role in the way we play now. I think he only really struggled in central midfield post injury or when he played left of a 2. I'm sure there's still a role for him post Conte but I think CCB is his best position whoever is in charge.

how difficult is the ccb role really? especially in a set-up that's hardly the most expansive.

all dier really needs to do is hold station, organise those around him and block/clear anything that comes his way - which he generally does pretty well. what i want more from him is better use of the ball. very occasionally he'll drop a nice one into the feet of our forwards but he should be doing it more, 9 times out of 10 he overhits them. his passes under pressure into midfield feel a bit too hit and hope to me as well and are often intercepted. the "passive" stat doesn't surprise me, especially when he refuses to engage players looking to shoot and instead stands there with his hands behind his back willing them on to hit one.

i don't dislike dier, i even bumped this thread early last season to say he's doing well but i think his upturn in form has been overplayed a bit. i just think the role he's playing and the level he's doing it at could be replicated by a lot of defenders in this league if we're being honest. i remember watching palace vs arsenal earlier in the season and joachim andersen was pinging passes around that were like laser-guided missiles, all whilst putting in a solid defensive performance, he was also very good against liverpool. i don't know if that's his usual level as i don't exactly watch palace on a weekly basis but i don't think dier should be untouchable and we should always be on the lookout for players who can bring more to the table - maybe dier can but right now i'd say he's just doing a solid job, no more no less.

How did he play today? With 2 starts in 2 games I can't see him not going to the World Cup now.

Very happy for him, but he's the kind of player who would probably have benefitted from a mid-season break. Ahh well!

From the looks of things I think he’ll still get a decent mid-season break, along with Kane, Saka etc

He was solid again tonight - the entire defence was hung out to dry by Maguire for the second goal, Dier and Shaw actually re-organised themselves well to cover for the human fridge as he lumbered his way back at the speed of slug, but that led to Havertz being free as the man Shaw would've been picking up. All this after another one of Maguire's utterly pointless winger cosplays which never achieve anything but impress the slow of wit.

Dier's been playing well as everyone has said and is quite clearly England's best CB. In a two I'd worry slightly more due to the lack of a decent partner and also a big gap at DM for England currently with Phillips out (Rice has genuinely been shite so far this season every time I've seen him play). In a three he's all you can ask for but Southgate either won't play a three and waste him, or he'll play it but blunt the rest of the team by not using the wing-backs properly and waste the opportunity.

Looked good until about 60-70 mins and then looked a bit leggy. Lost his footing which lead to a dangerous attack and gave a sloppy pass away to their midfield to invite pressure. Other than that not much wrong from him. Maguire was shocking though and the Pope looked nervous every time the ball was played back to him. I'll be surprised if Dier isn't starting every game for England now. Walker has looked really poor at times in right centre back so it's a problem area for us. Basically nobody is doing any better than Dier back there.

This does not look promising for weekend.

Hopefully he is just stiff after getting off the coach but it doesn't look great. Let's see if they put out any training videos today before getting ahead of ourselves.

I imagine Sanchez plays central and may be ok with Romero and Lenglet either side. It worked with Vertonghen and Alderweireld either side of him. He just needs good passers near to him so he can play it simple.
