Said it the other day in the Conte thread - Dier should be a backup. Only reason he's looked good under Conte is cos we've played him in the most passive, protected role in the entire league as the CCB in a deep Conte back line.

Second you move him away from CCB and he has to get more involved in the play rather than simply playing as a quarterback the cracks instantly start showing.

We should sign Lenglet on a perm to play CCB and then sign a top class LCB. Sell Sanchez and use Dier as the squad backup.

Trouble is he is essentially a back up in the sense he's backing up Romero atm. I think back up for CCB at best. We need 2 more centre backs so it is going to be uncomfortable at times until then.

In Conte's system the CCB is super passive and the two wide CBs are really involved. Dier was top for passive actions cos he basically never ever actually stepped up to engage players last season (which is when CBs typically expose themselves). His job was simply to sit deep, spray passes in possession, then make headers and put his body in the way of shots. He pretty much does nothing else in Conte's system and very rarely puts himself in a position to make a mistake. .

Guess who made the most 'active' defensive actions in the league last season? Romero. His style is the polar opposite, constantly stepping up, making challenges, taking risks and getting involved in the play higher up the pitch.
